are you 4 real?

-because they have kids that didn't cause that mess and deserve a shot at life too?
-not everyone that gets into debt did it 'on purpose'

Is anyone even more disgusted because most people against a social system in the USA call themselves "Christians"? At least thats my impression, because mainly Republicans seem to be against it, and those seem to tend to be more religious. Wasn't being Christian all about devoting yourself for the sake of ours and stuff?
But those people running to the churches all the time were always the most bigoted assholes of all time.

I don't think a health insurance should be enforced on any adult, but every adult should have the possibility to have at least the necessary level of healh insurance, not depending on wealth, education or employment.
Plus, any child (people under 18) should be automatically insured.

What is so bad about taxes and stuff anyway? Look at the American infrastructure. It is shit. What kind of street does the millionaire want to drive his Lamborghini on?

Europe certainly isn't great in every aspect, but all of the northern countries (that are those that are the most wealthy) have working health insurance / social system. Think about it.

yes EU has its flaws, but it's not a coincidence that some of the happiest people statistically live in the northern part of EU

source-maps wrote:yeah.. if only America didn't blow half of its budget on the military ^^

it might seem that way but that is not even the case.

most of the budget goes toward social entitlements programs that have become cancers to the nation...things like social security and (most recently) the individual mandate for health insurance.

bro our country spends the most on our military than any other. More than, what is it, the next 5 or so countries down that list combined.
Tell me we're not spending way too much on our military.

I never said that we don't spend the most on our military. We definitely spend the most on our military!! We spend five times more money on our military (over $700 billion in 2011) than the 2nd biggest spender worldwide (China is #2 with $143 billion in 2011). I think we could cut down on our military dramatically and still win most wars. There is an absurd amount of fraud, waste, and abuse going on in the military (for example, the Army and Air Force seem to arbitrarily change uniforms every few years just for the hell of it, and thusly hold contests with dozens of companies to redesign the uniform (reinvent the wheel)...why can't they just stick to one awesome uniform like the Marines do?) But a discussion on US military waste is not what I wanted to stir up.

The national budget does indeed go mainly toward social entitlement programs and so-called "safety net" programs. Things like Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid take up nearly 40% all by themselves, and that is before counting all of the "safety net" programs like food stamps, welfare checks, earned-income credits, large-family tax credits, etc. The safety net programs were designed to keep large chunks of the public floating just above the poverty line...so the US can boast about having "low poverty" even though it is an artificial statistic. Without these safety net programs, we would have a nearly doubled poverty statistic in this country. To top it all off, it is painfully easy to distinguish truly poor people from the fraudulent bastards who suckle on the government teat.

To wrap this back around to the original video I posted (regarding the future of space exploration)...

...consider the fact that 20% of the national budget goes toward the military (rather, the Department of Defense) and 40% goes toward the social entitlement programs...another 15% goes toward the safety net programs...the remaining 25% goes toward every other agency in existence here in the US. Science and medical research gets %2 of the entire budget.

NASA gets 0.50% of the entire budget. Another easy way to look at it is described in the video..."half a penny" of every tax dollar. If we doubled the tax to a full penny, the video posits that NASA would go through a resurgence of activity and research that could stimulate a strong nationalistic change of heart. That change would stimulate other branches of our economy in such a way as to completely destroy the debtor status of our people. Just watch the damn video!!

Now, when you raise a tax in one area, you have to pull that from another area lest you commit political suicide via raising taxes. There has to be give and take in this complex economic-political landscape. What better place to take the extra half-penny from than from the military? What better place to take the extra half-penny from than from the massive social entitlement programs? Who is to say that the extra NASA funding won't empower the nation to get off its ass and return to US to the position of glory it once held?

BTW: I pulled data from various Wikipedia articles and from this site: http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=1258

I couldn't agree more with the video. Neil deGrasse Tyson <3
I know I defend the social programs we have because today the talk from the far right is to get rid of these programs altogether. Programs that were installed after the Great Depression to prevent another one. Part of the reason the 2008 recession happened was b/c we deregulated some of these safety nets.

All that aside, if a program is bloated, then yes it should be trimmed back, though another solution to balancing the books is taxes. I know nobody likes them, but they're necessary and it can't be helped if US citizens think the government is 'out to get them' just because it taxes them. Truth be told, taxes are at the lowest rates they've been in years because of stuff like the Bush tax cuts (which haven't expired yet).

That video is right and people need to understand it won't come free to achieve those great things.
The inspiration as to why I'm here: Adam Foster; Minerva. Great job man.

I leave for a couple of weeks and the random thread becomes a huge shithole.

Fuck all of you. Someone start posting dicks or something.

If I wanted to see people say dumb shit (and be serious) then I'd read youtube comments on 9/11 conspiracy videos.
