What ever happened to the Package???

Postby MayheM on Mon Jul 13, 2009 3:44 pm

I don't know why this popped into my head this morning but I was skimming through some of the posts and I remembered the "Interlopers Package". I think I remember that's what it was called in the thread. Where we all turned in our info and something was going to be shipped around. It was like a year ago at least, probably closer to two. I am guessing that never happened and I was just wondering what killed the idea...

Fun fact: I remembered the same package about 5 hours ago... Great minds think alike, lol.

As far as I can remember, Emazing got the idea a long time ago, and started a thread about it. The idea was very well recieved by many of the 'lopers, and it became clear that we needed someone to be in control of who should send the package to who, someone to have all the addresses of the people involved and so on. Emazing, as it was her idea, became that person. I don't think we got as far as exchanging addresses, because Emazing disappeared, and IIRC, she didn't want anyone else to take over her project, so the idea died. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

If people are interested in reviving the project, count me in. I've been a fan of the Interlopers Package since the beginning.

yeah indeed they do think alike. Oddly enough, this was actually triggered by me seeing her in an old thread and The package popped into my head. I also remember sending my address off to her, and I now realize who that chick outside my window has been. :D Kidding...

That is a bummer, it was such an awesome idea.

So aside from 1447 and myself, anyone up for Interlopers Package 2.0?

Stuff!!!

Actually it was nothing specific. Some wanted little things that where from the area you are in. Like things you can not find everywhere. Others though it would be cool to have small gifts. Other still were thinking of just adding to the package. Putting something in and shipping it to the next person. Though if that was done whoever slacked off and did not ship it off just got a big box of stuff from other people. Though It was never meant to be something really expensive.

The last time I think we agreed on some kind of picture (printed out photo, post card, stuff like that) from the place we live. That way the package doesn't get insanely heavy, and can probably be shipped as a letter (IE a lot cheaper to send around). Just think about it, we can send the package around, and when it reaches the last person on the list, he can upload all the photos here, and we get to see lots of cool pictures from around the world!

Awesome idea regarding what we should put in the package:

Person 1 takes a photo of himself in front of something cool in his home town, and uploads it to his computer. He then takes the file, and puts it on a portable USB flash drive. The flash drive then goes in an envelope, and the envelope is mailed to the next person on the list, Person 2.

Person 2 then takes a photo of whatever, uploads it to his computer, puts it on the flash drive, before sending the envelope to the next person, Person 3. Person 3 then repeats the whole process, before sending it to Person 4, and so on.

One difference is that the last person on the list is bound to send the envelope back to Person 1 (as it's his flash drive). Person 1 then uploads the images here on this site.

Don't have a clue what the hell I'm talking about? Most people don't. Look at this image, maybe you'll get the idea:
Image

Pros:
- Lighweight (the weigth never changes either), can be mailed as a letter.
- Very easy to upload here in the end, as it's all already digital files. This would have been a lot harder with e.g. post cards, as we would have had to scan it or take a picture of it or whatnot before actually uploading.

Cons:
- Everyone on the list needs to have a digital camera, but in these days, even if you don't own one yourself, someone you know probably do. Alternately, we could mail an actual digital camera around, but I don't think anyone's very keen on sending something that expensive around the world.

So, what do you guys think?

The USB idea is good, but surely it makes it pointless as people can just upload the picture here.

What might be better is to send a USB stick, along with an pre-determined object. Say for example it was a toy Hammer (for the Hammer editor) then each person takes the object somewhere cool where they live, takes a picture of themself with the object and then uploads the picture onto the USB stick and then mails that and the object to the next person.

This way it makes it worthwhile sending digital media and we all get to see the chosen object go all round the world.
