Game development blogs

Postby windlab on Tue Aug 10, 2010 4:36 am

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list; only those which I find sufficiently interesting qualify

AmstradHero Richard Crockett, author of the recommended Making a Better Quest (pdf)

Chris Hecker's Website excellent essays from SpyParty's dev

Eskil Steenberg's Blog more philosophy than development

Filip Coulianos' Blog has some great essays on level design

Fullbright Steve Gaynor, some intriguing thoughts on game design

Gausswerks: Design Reboot Jack Monahan, superbly illustrated game redesign

Jailbreak: Source Blog contains one of few text XSI tutorials

Nodraw.net Source engine level design

No Time To Play when development IS the game

Nullpointer Tom Betts, indie developer

Radiator Blog one of the few to update regularly!

Robert Briscoe's Devblog the man who quashed Source doubters

The Psychology of Video Games Jamie Madigan knows why

The Witness Jonathan Blow's new game

Wesley Tack's Blog inspirational mapping from Off Limits dev

Zeitgeist promising start for new blog, contains Maya-to-Source export tutorial

I would like to have made this Source-specific, but there's a positive dearth of Source blogs.

Hey Windlab it would be great if you'd keep updating the first post with all the links added ;)

@F0xHunter - I rather wish Vivi'd update his blog more often, I enjoyed his Sketchup level mock-ups

@Dionysos - Nice one, added

@ErikKiller - After I've finished my lunch ;)

Qualifies. It's a blog after all.

I started looking out for Source blogs after I discovered Blink's Un-named Mod Blog, thinking that if people blog about mundane activities such as knitting, surely someone would blog about Source modding.
Unfortunately, Blink's blog remains unique in that sense thus far.

yeah sorry about not updating my regular blog. I've been busy with chells legend and keeping that up to date.

worth a look but im not sure if it should go up in this thread. Eventually though I hope to turn the blog into 1 giant how I made the mod site.

I will be updating my old blog once again when I get a chance to start my Game Design Exercises! Which will basically cover ideas and different practices of design (could be fun!)

@Psy & Generalvivi
I had bookmarked, and had already considered your blogs for addition, however neither of them really discuss discuss game dev as defined in "To Qualify:", hope you don't mind.

That said, maybe I should expand this to cover all mod blogs - thoughts?
The VDC already has a list of Devblogs though I only found it by searching.

Not at all, my blog just basically goes over stuff I'm working on atm, I never really discussed theories or anything so imo my generalvivi blog should prob not be on this list. In the future though my Chell's legend one will be a better candidate. So no worries :)
