Valves confirms themselves no HL2: EP3...kinda

Postby Hollow on Mon May 09, 2011 5:01 pm

Read this article, have a think, have a cup of tea. This is still no definitive confirmation, but if you haven't already given up hope, it might be good to do so now.

Time to get comfy for the long haul till Half Life 3.

All this really tells us is that instead of making a small episodic-type game, they will be making full-fledged complete games. To me, that sounds like a good thing.

umm isn't this all obvious?
like... since ep3 suddenly started to take forever obvious?
Its not like Valve had any other franchise that ran in episodes...

To me this is not surprising since Episodic Content can't be supplied at this speed and with their goals for quality of content.

Now we just have confirmation that their taking their time making games the way they should....

I bet this does not even change the game from being called Half-Life 2: Episode 3.
Unless they plan on marketing Half Life 3 after spending the last 4 years calling it Episode 3.

And here I thought Valve was a videogame company, not an "entertainment as service company." If I want entertainment as service, I'll get a hooker.

Don't take this as a bad thing, all this means is that Episode 3 will be called Half-Life 3 instead. (Or something similar to HL3)

Well, Episode 3 is considered Episodic content, so it wouldnt really be an Episode if they decided to turn it into a fully fledged game. But this is Valve, and they are renowned to pull crazy shit on their fans. We'll just have to wait.

As long as we get something of an equivalent of Episode 3 I'm Happy.

Maybe Half-Life 3 in Source 2?

The rapid-fire development model doesn’t necessarily spell the end of mammoth five-year projects at Valve, Newell added.

“You want to distribute your choices. Right now there’s a bunch of pressures to have shorter and shorter development cycles. But that could change.

“I’d have to find a reason for it to change, but it could. I don’t want to be caught completely off-guard and overly invested in one area.

Right. So that could change, he needs a reason implying he hasn't got one, implying they haven't even started on a mammoth project.

I think throwing chicken bones would be more informative than that article.

This obsession with names is disturbing...

Its the same game people, just because they ditch the episodic format does not mean the name does not get called Episode 3.

I never heard a single declaration from Valve about a concurrent HL project. I never heard them calling it "EP3" or "HL3" or whatever, and worst of all, they never promised anything.
There simply isn't an EP3. We can only hope they're making a game at all.

I think it's inevitable that the HL franchise will continue, after all it's one of the strongest names in the industry, but so was Duke Nukem - and it took, what, 14 years to continue? Nuts.

they have mentioned ep3 quite a bit in fact. After episode 1 was released they said they were working on episode 2 and 3 concurrently, and that 3 was going to be massive. Also they said that the magnusson device was something that they were testing for ep3, but they decided to slide it into ep2 because it was coming along so nicely.
