Autodesk retires Softimage

Postby peegee on Thu Mar 06, 2014 7:56 am

FYI:
Autodesk will support Softimage no longer than April 2016.
http://www.si-community.com/community/v ... hp?p=41754

This might affect the Mod Tool as well. If you have an installation file of
the Autodesk XSI Mod Tool it might be a good idea to store it in a save place
like an external drive etc.

I am working with Softimage very long time and I am really not amused
about the &§%&% of Autodesk.

I remember when Autodesk bought out Softimage and raised the price of all the software they had developed. Didn't make anyone happy. Kind of shitty of them if you ask me. But I guess that's business.

A very ugly business for my part. They have meager understanding of clients needs.
No one is save now, the same might happen to other software packages of Autodesk as well.
2018: Maya retires??, 2022: will 3dsmax follow?? You never know.

Re: Autodesk retires Softimage / Petition

Postby peegee on Thu Mar 06, 2014 12:07 pm

There is a petition on change.org against the retirement of this important
software. Models of HL2 were made with it. Maybe this petition will help a little bit.

The only thing I'm surprised about is that it's only happening now.

The mod tool hasnt been available at their site since ages AFAIK

Everytime i had to make a clean install i downloaded it from here:

http://www.moddb.com/downloads/xsi-mod-tool-601 (yes i´m sticking to 6.01 which works tons better for me). There´s also a download for the 7.5: http://www.moddb.com/downloads/autodesk ... od-tool-75 but since the last time i tried downloading it mirrors werent available, i keep a copy of the installer in my backup HD. Just in case anyone ever needs it, just Pm me.

I only started using it for the Noesis tutorials; at the time I thought that was the only software you could use to model for HL2. Aside from sentimental reasons, how is this a bad thing?; what does XSI do that Maya and 3DS don't?.

Or is this about model formats and compatibility issues?.

My unsentimental reason is that we have here in our company about 32 TB of Softimage projects
and commercial jobs which ( in case the lincense code won't be extended after a machine crash )
might be all transfered into nirwana and can't be read by other software.
And that will bother me and my clients very much.

For more "sentimantal" reasons scroll down here

Since they pretty much "own" the market, they can do these things. I'm sure they'll merge Maya and Max sometime in the future. No offense, but it's kinda ridiculous they have 3 (very) similar software packages which are developed by 3 teams instead of 1 core which allows for different layouts/functions/etc.

If I could completely customize 3dStudio to obey all my shortcut orders, which i use for XSI, then i´d switch to it. But I think the tool fails in the man´s arms when it´s just too complex for him. I make better models with XSI even if it´s inferior.

Can anyone recommend an alternate 3d software similar to Softimage? I love the hotkey interface and the features and recent UV unwrap feature added to Softimage 2012. I really dont want to switch but its losing support for exporters like UDK, so I will have to migrate soon :(

Really sad, I absoultely loved this software. Ive talked to people who have came from maya to XSI and they love XSI. It was a great piece of software :(

Yeah, I've had similar experiences, anyone who uses XSI then has to switch to Maya always hates it. Myself included.
