The hyper threading on the i7 is really good for compiling maps. I remember a few years ago, some interloper did some compiling benchmarks and found it finishes about 30% faster with hyperthreading on.

@Hollow

Get a better hard drive. 5400 RPM is shitty. You want 7200 RPM.

Holy shit. That's a pretty awesome price for the specs. I'd probably go with a different case though. I prefer full towers over mid towers to be honest.

Still. Holy shit. Maybe once I buy my car I'll start saving up for that config, unless of course it's too outdated by then.

@Nub The NZXT Switch 810 is a sexy case. You might want to bump up he SSD to 128 GB for some games.

I didn't notice the RPM speed on the HDD, good call. These were just a guideline really.
I'll be buying as I go (going to get the Case/keyboard/mouse etc first, then cpu and mobo and coolers, then leave the ram and gpu till last, incase I want to upgrade!

Nice looking work space, but I personally hate glass desks. I had one for a while and it was a finger print nightmare. Always greasy looking no matter how much I cleaned it and washed my hands.

I've always been partial to wood more than anything, though I think the best desk I ever had was my dad's old drafting table (a laminated sheet of wood essentially) which he used to use for measuring out kitchen renovations and other such jobs he got. It had a lot of surface area without any unnecessary bulk. The legs were made of pipes to keep it relatively light, but sturdy at the same time. You could also adjust the height of the front legs to some degree to give it a slant. My mom decided, without my consent, to give it away during a move to a new house. Was really upset about that for a while since it had some sentimental value to me.

I've been using a crusty old wooden desk for about 5 years now. It's not terrible, but there's hardly any leg room, so I have to keep my computer chair at the lowest height. But then my line of vision isn't level with the center of my monitor. I really want to invest in a nice desk that's not overkill and is very proportionate to my height and whatnot. Might ask my dad to build me one if he's got enough material drops and such lying around in his shop.

Well it's no secret that you can get better parts four months after my build, especially after the Nvidia release with the new Kepler structure. Point is I wanted the name and brand oblivious to the price of mine. If I wanted to build a custom system I damn well would have, but I wanted a PC from a renowned company for quality and boasting rights to the name.

As far as cases are concerned they make them like a canvas so that when people order a special paint job there is room for it. I would like to see some one try that on a home built, or anywhere else for that matter.

@nub: if your dad has woodworking tools and materials, then it might be a good time to start taking lessons from him and learn how to use all those tools and stuff. who knows...one day they could all belong to you.

i would love to build my own desk, and my wife's dad has an entire woodworking tool suite in his workshop. the problem is that i am in texas and he is in south carolina so i won't be able to learn anything for a long time...but i suspect that one day i will inherit all of those tools so i am really hoping to learn how they all work before he dies (not like it's gonna happen next week, but still...).

if left to my own devices, i would basically email valve and ask them what their desks look like, and try to replicate that with some high-quality lightweight wood and stains. maybe a flat sheet metal top with safety-rounded edges that i can replace if needed.

right now i am working off of a fold-up table and fold-up chair, so my ergonomics are totally fucked. i would be so ashamed to take a picture...especially after blink shamed us all with his clean glass desk that he probably never even uses.

My dad's not really a woodworker. He can certainly build things with wood, but he's not a literal "woodworker." That's a very specific skill set if I recall. He never got in to it though.

He's simply been in the building trades for 30+ years, so he has a very broad set of skills. He's had his own solid surface business since like 2001. He pretty much makes acrylic counter tops for a living. But he was also a long-time cabinet maker. I helped him with his work a lot while I was living with him, but I've since moved out and started working in retail, so I never have time to help him these days. I can't say I like the building trades though. It's really tough work, and it's been hit hard by the economy. Really hard. Plus, working at commercial job sites is a god damn nightmare. Residential jobs are much better.

He actually built a pretty big and elaborate computer desk for a Dell computer he bought when he first started his business. He still uses it to this day.

And yeah, I'll more than likely receive all of his tools in the future (unless he sells them), though I'll have zero use for them. I'd probably keep some of his really really old tools as mementos. He's got tools older than me in his shop.

Sorry for derailing. :?

It's not really derailing IMO because this is all about making our very own desktops and workspaces.
