Map Battle 51 - Vastness

Postby Zecrah on Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:01 pm

So we're starting this up again. Hopefully, I'll run it myself and do my best to keep it going. I have a few more ideas, but of course contributions are always welcome; PM or post here or in the discussion forum. Without further ado...

vast
adj. vast·er, vast·est
1. Very great in size, number, amount, or quantity.
2. Very great in area or extent; immense.
3. Very great in degree or intensity.
n. Archaic
An immense space.

The Goal
Something that conveys that sheer sense of massiveness. Perhaps where it is almost silent, where it could be mistaken for an off-worldly place absent of life in a huge, barren landscape. Or perhaps a large, vast mountain. Or just a demonstration of a seemingly infinite repeat of terrain. Something that just seems huge. Or look at it as in definition one: very great in size, number, amount of quantity. A huge, area that looks as if one thing has been copy and pasted to the next. That awe-inspiring location.

It might sound like a tall order, but think about it. It's all about that atmosphere you show. You may not have to do a great deal of mapping, but it's about fine tuning and creating those perfect tints of light or the dust motes that settle just correctly in front of the window to the enormous, untouched warehouse that has lay dormant. It can be specific or as broad as you like.

The Rules
For now, it is limited to any Valve engine stated on the rules page.
Custom content is more than welcome.
Provide lots of lovely jubbly WIP screenshots and interesting stuff :D

Deadline
Three weeks. The deadline is Saturday 27th, so have everything in by 23:59 on Friday so that the votes can commence Saturday morning.

Good luck, have fun, post WIPs, kick ass.

Yes I know it's the wrong section at the moment but it'll be moved.

Thanks for that. A clear, realistic demonstration of your mapping ability I assume! Will put yours in the vote.

I've had this idea in the back of my head for months, I may finally be able to use it!

Cool, a new map battle. The last (and only) battle I entered, I ended up with some WIPs and an unfinished map, so this time I'm stating off strong. Here are my WIP shots so far:

Awful-looking start. VRAD seemed to dislike the 150 combine soldiers I put into the map, and I realized the ceiling was too low.

Less soldiers, less fullbright.

Added some atmosphere.

I need to fix some lighting, add details, and I'm not really sure if I'm conveying vastness (it feels more like massiveness) but I figure I have time to work on representing the theme more accurately.

Wow, that does look good. Nice work man.

I'm hoping to keep these map battles up, so you'll be able to enter some more. ^^ And as for conveying 'massiveness', that's the sort of thing it's aimed for. It's definitely shaping up nicely. Of course, FPS doesn't matter and neither do sounds or anything so if you're FPS ends up as 3, who cares xD. Getting some low down screenshots for the final would make it look large and vast too, possibly with the FOV increased if it isn't already.

Nice start.

Well... I guess this is a good enough reason to come out of lurking.

Not sure if it's vast enough yet.. oh well, work in progress.

It's a great start, but please, please, PLEASE find a new cliff texture. I swear, the Highway 17 cliff texture is the most overused stock texture ever.

You should make it an atoll or something, and have a great shot of the ocean. If you could incorporate an endless ocean effect, it would really accommodate the "vast" theme for the map battle.
