Alright, hey guys :). I'm pretty much a new mapper, meaning I started mapping as soon as the SDK was released and I just do it for fun on the side, and I think I'm going to try my hand at this.

One thing I'm wondering is, is there any way to test my map in the Hidden mod after I compile? It seems that the mod code itself requires two people to play before you can walk around, and because of the mods stupid "camera" spectator system, you can't even fly around and look at things, you're stationary. It's mighty annoying, and it'll make things downright impossible if I can't get past this.

Thanks for any help, and good luck to those in the contest! :D

Im liking it ferret,
But quite alot of brushwork there.

Seems like a model would be more fit or somthing.

It's too bad, I was thinking I might finally enter a Map Battle.

This requires a little too much work though.

Nope, that complex that I'm basing it on is now a museum, but it was a home for the elderly. There is a seperate building for crazies (with bars on the windows and such) which I haven't started on yet. But they do claim that the buildings are haunted.

I agree, but I can't model. I wish I could, but I won't be able to learn in less than a month or two. I suppose I'll be doing a lot of func_detailing.

Right, first things first,
I set up Hammer, no sweat,
made my map (well the start of it) no sweat,
tryed to test it, need another player, fair enough,
start a dedicated server and BOOM crashes every time another player joins,
can anyone tell me how to fix this, if possibe?
or tell me how to test my map with only the one player do I have to run the map from hammer as soon as its compiled to get single player access?

Sorted, was a problem with my player starts!

but now the hidden stands out a mile in fog :S anyone know how to solve that or do I just get rid of a big chunk of atmosphere?

Is there a turorial on how to map for hidden ?
I have putted the .fgd in the "sourcesdk" "bin" folder but i dont know how to map for it?
like spawning props, the cams for spectates, and the player starts?
And like you choose what you want to map for (half life 2, half life 2 deathmatch, counter strike source) should there also be a "hidden source" one?

That's alright Barrakid :p. In my eyes, almost half the mapping process is planning and layout anyways, so being able to test isn't really needed at first.

What did you change? Right now I've got three Iris starts and a Hidden start. Actually, just to check, the Iris should use info_marine_start right?

ferret wrote:I suppose I'll show everyone what I'm doing. This is about 1 and a half hours of work so far, but I'm sure it will be 100's of total hours to finish

Basically, this map will be a large abandoned county home (formerly for the elderly). There will be an immense main building with many rooms, kitchens, basements, and attics. Then on the grounds will be a main front yard, a "looney" house for the former crazies, a graveyard, a barn, and other assorted buildings. There will also be a secret path through the woods that the marines enter through -- the hidden will begin in the building.

This will be a massive map, and I have 1% done so far.
When I'm done, I'll convert it into a dm map.

btw, it's actually based somewhat on a real place near my home:

Not bad, but I'd say go for a daytime map, it's very hard to see the hidden in the dark, so if you have a dark interior and a light exterior it kind of balances out, 617 wouldn't want to stay inside because he's at a disadvantage because it's tight and hard to escape, but he wouldn't want to go outside because he would be easy to see, but hard to hit. It gives players with different play styles a chance to experiment.

For testing the Hidden on your own: password-protect your server, then once you're in-game (waiting for another player, which wont happen cos you've set a password), go to console and type "bot add".

A bot is added, but they're incredibly stupid and don't do a thing at the mo, so you can happily run around to have a look.

It wont let me add a bot when I join!

It still says "waiting for player" when I password protect.

Any ideas?
