Here's a chain:
Model battle: create someting
Art Battle: create a skin for it
Map Battle: use it!

Yeah but wouldn't that severely limit the number of able contestants? Not everyone model and skin.

Distribute the model or skin, let people choose thier model and you can vote under categories or something.

And abstract ideas lend themselves to all three of those (to relative degrees), if I said 'agony' you could create a torture device and a torture chamber. If I said 'ecstasy' you could create a pink elephant and then LSD land.

Just another thought.

I think we discussed this before, but that would be fun to maybe try a few battles like that. First the model battle and the best model goes to art where the best texture goes to the map battle.

It could be a collaborative effort between interlopers. And even if not, I think there are enough people who, if given enough time, could learn how to model and skin and implement it. I just started learning Blender a week ago and I feel confident enough to make a simple model. Skinning and exporting to Hammer might take some effort, but I'm sure others and myself could learn given enough time.

tl;dr: I'm down.

I can finally skin AND map, so I'd be up for it. Modify your model's skin to suit your map for extra points!

This may be crazy, but i think it would be cool if we started doing special map battles. Essentially everyone would have to create a small map that provides about 5 minutes of gameplay. The point would be to focus all on gameplay, so personally I would make the rules as such:

Dev textures only
NO decals or overlays
Only 30 props maximum

I've been thinking about this because the map battles we currently have focus only on looks in maps, and my mapping style has approved accordingly. However, it seems to me that making good gameplay in a map is an even harder challenge than making stuff look good.

Yes this is something I thought we were going to see but never came, I'd participate in a gameplay battle, dev textures only, but decals and models have to be included at least for gameplay purposes, ie. doors and object puzzles but otherwise only brushes. It would also have to be either combat or non combat to keep entries uniform.

That results in a vast, convulted number of entries. I don't want to be the judge downloading 20 maps to play them all through and deal with incredibly boring dev maps. If you're interested in that kinda stuff talk to an admin privately or set it up yourself and see how it goes. Map Battles are here to concentrate on interpretation of a theme, and show off skilful work.

And I wouldn't have it any other way, even though I'm shit.

I thought Vivi was working on a challenge for gameplay..
& I agree with rotinaj, it would complicate the regular battles too much.

what about making a background map, set a specific theme and then you have to make a scene that follows that theme.

You're just trying to get another theme where you can make another bright colorful mushroom land!

Has Cyberpunk ever been done? Or is the theme not broad enough.
