Should it be a moving object? (dynamic) if not make it prop_static and use the -staticproppolys command for compiling. But if the CM was one pice, it would cast a dark shadow and you won't see anything of the light from behind the grate.
What's the lightmap gridsize for the faces where the shadow is supposed to be?
If it's to high, the shadows will blur and you won't notice them.
And it also depends on the light source, if it's to far away, having a wrong angle or is to weak it will blur shadows too.
For me it looks as if the light sources are pointed to the floor and the light which shines into the room is some kind of bounced (radiostiy) lightning.
Try pointing a strong light straight towards the grate and compile again. well, might be not the effect you are aiming for, but it will make sure if the grate is able to cast shadows.
