Model with no shadow *Fixed*

Postby DarkIceJack on Sat Feb 14, 2009 3:34 am

I have made a model of a metal security gate

But the problem is that there is no shadow being cast by the model, there is a light behind it, and the shadow option is turned on.

Just wanting to know how to fix this

oh lol, you're right.

When you click on the compile button in the upper right, there should be a text box, just put "-staticproppolys" without the quotes and you should be set.

Not working
The prop is a dynamic prop and the map just ends up fullbright

Well it is a bit of a pain but you could use block lights brushs and make the same layout of bars with that to make the shadow right...

The only other thing I can think of it lower the lightmap size on the floor where you want the shadow to be so you get a finer detailed shadow... that is actually your best bet...

Still no luck with getting the model to show shadows

Haven't tried with using block lights brushs but i think that would just look bad

Here's the qc file of the model if that would help

$scale 1

$modelname "metalgate/metalgate.mdl"
$body Body "metalgate.smd"

$surfaceprop "metal"
$cdmaterials "models/metalgate"

$sequence idle "metalgate.smd" fps 30 ACT_IDLE 1

$collisionmodel "metalgate_collision.smd" { $concave }

how did you create the fence??? :D
if you used by example 16 box brushes..... your colission model should have 16 convex parts with each a own smooth material id by example mat. id 0 to 15.....

if you did not do this corectly you will end up with only one convex part.......
i shal do a nice test ok ;) for a fence that a bit looks like yours

Should it be a moving object? (dynamic) if not make it prop_static and use the -staticproppolys command for compiling. But if the CM was one pice, it would cast a dark shadow and you won't see anything of the light from behind the grate.
What's the lightmap gridsize for the faces where the shadow is supposed to be?
If it's to high, the shadows will blur and you won't notice them.
And it also depends on the light source, if it's to far away, having a wrong angle or is to weak it will blur shadows too.
For me it looks as if the light sources are pointed to the floor and the light which shines into the room is some kind of bounced (radiostiy) lightning.
Try pointing a strong light straight towards the grate and compile again. well, might be not the effect you are aiming for, but it will make sure if the grate is able to cast shadows.

decreasse lightmaps of the room, it will make shadows sharper and probably it'll work
