Adding Content (For Half-Life 2 Mapping)

Postby Zaughi on Thu Aug 02, 2012 5:13 pm

Okay, this is quite important. I bought the Orange Box about a month ago, and I'd like to import the EP1, EP2, Half-Life 2, and Portal models, textures, NPCs, and be able to use them in Hammer.

The first problem I ran into was that when I opened Source SDK, and then refreshed my SDK content, and clicked the drop-down box. All I saw was Counter-Strike: Source, Garry's Mod and Team Fortress 2. Nothing involving Half-Life 2 or Portal.

The second problem was, when I ran Hammer for Garry's Mod (I use Garry's Mod for testing my maps, because it automatically imports content from downloaded Source engine games), I had no textures to work with, the Hunter, Zombine, (and all the other NPCs) were error models, and I had absolutely no Orange Box models (part of the map involves a forest, which I need the EP2 pines for. They were non-existent.).

Does anyone know the problem?

Well it obviously didn't correctly mount any of the games. My best bet for you is to manually extract all models and materials out of your .gcf files for all the games, and put them in garrys mod's main folder. So they all show up in hammer.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

First Problem:There are several categories in the Source SDK:Source Engine 2006,2007,2008,2009 and MP. Half-life 2 is Source Engine 2009.

Oh, whoops. I'm using MP. I'll test it on 2009. Thanks much all.

I tried to extract the stuff out of the GCFs, but whenever I tried to move the materials/models it crashed GCFScape. Any other ideas?

Crashed or locked up?

The program locks up when extracting large amounts of content. Just don't touch it and it will finish in a few minutes.

Ah, it locked up, thanks. I have one more problem: Most of the textures are purple/black checkered and a lot of the models are errors, or are just missing, like the forest grass texture from EP2, even after I extracted the content from the GCFs. (Example: The Zombine is an error model.)

You must of messed up the directories. All the folder structures must be the same or else that will happen.

Pulled the materials, models and sound folders out of EP1/EP2 content and materials folders. Never once edited the GCFs.
