env_screenoverlay blocks certain gui elements

Hi, in my mod I have players read pages they find in the form of env_screenoverlay. It works fine for the most part but I bound a certain key to close the page and the env_hudhint won't display with the overlay open! It appears when the overlay isn't active but that isn't helpful. I doubt it would be a good idea to show the player that command before they open the page, which would confuse them and they might forget what it is.

Also, in another map I play a cutscene with an old film static overlay. messages like game_text don't seem to display when it's active either...

How would I go about fixing this problem? I don't want to go to the trouble of making my own vgui panel or anything like that.

EDIT: I have an alternative theory. I use a point_viewcontrol along with the overlay to freeze the player and prevent the overlay flashing when they move their screen. Maybe that's what's causing it.
