i've been thinking about an SSD, probably two 64gb for dualbooting. OS, a few games, and swap are all i'd really need to use them for, though i kinda doubt the need for swap with 8gb of ram (hopefully 16 somewhere down the line). with a big enough buffer in ram, even 1080p works fine with 7200rpm drives. like i said, i plan on doing mass storage with a few tb of drives.

as for z@c; gaming and mapping on the windows side of things, video editing/encoding/watching, photo editing (in the half-gigapixel range, mind you) and pretty much everything else on the linux side.
i had fun once, and it was awful.

Come on man, those things are expensive and any SSD you could get at a reasonable price would only be able to fit you OS and few games on.

But it's worth booting Windows in 20 seconds or less :-D

windows+application start up, swap file

If you don't play a lot of games or don't have a lot of application unlike me, you can install your games on the SSD too and your games load incredibly fast.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 22-136-358 (Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB 32MB for 99USD)

Considering getting a new primary HDD for my desktop. My current one is pretty slow and maxed out(300GB).

Oh, and a SATA 3 drive should work with a SATA 2 mobo right? Just not at 6Gb/s.

No non-industrial non-ssd disk in existance is able to work at sata2 speeds, let alone sata3. But yeah, sata3 is backwards compatible

I know, I assume the only reason they even do put such high speed connectors on the drives is so they can say that they "feature" it.

I'll be ordering a new HDD tonight. As my current desktop drive just died(or at least in the late stages of dying).

I was going to get a smaller fast drive. Thinking a fast TB drive would be expensive... Then I ran some tests on my brother's 1TB drive(recommend by Antie):
Code: Select all
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Terabyte drive
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s]

           Sequential Read :   138.098 MB/s
          Sequential Write :   134.726 MB/s
         Random Read 512KB :    49.253 MB/s
        Random Write 512KB :    63.329 MB/s
    Random Read 4KB (QD=1) :     0.611 MB/s [   149.2 IOPS]
   Random Write 4KB (QD=1) :     1.277 MB/s [   311.7 IOPS]
   Random Read 4KB (QD=32) :     0.768 MB/s [   187.6 IOPS]
  Random Write 4KB (QD=32) :     1.298 MB/s [   316.9 IOPS]

  Test : 1000 MB [T: 16.0% (149.0/931.5 GB)] (x5)
  Date : 2012/03/05 22:57:07
    OS : Windows 7 Home Premium Edition [6.1 Build 7600] (x86)

As you can see. It's sure as hell not slow like I thought it would be. It's four times faster than my old one. So I'm getting this TB one.:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822152185

With all this space. I'm gonna throw Ubuntu(or some Linux distro), WinXP(why not?), Win7(x86), and Win7(64) on it. Ubuntu won't take much space, as it's just going to be for general computing(web, docs, SteamChat, etc.) and will be entirely loaded into my RAM on start up.

@Gary On r/BuildaPC that HDD is one of the most recommended ones due to it low cost (well before the flooding) and great performance. Compared to the WD Caviar Black that's supposed to be a better HDD, the Spinpoint F3 is actually faster/better (there's a chart but I forgot where it's at).

@Gary

why would you use four different os'es? Multi-OSs are annoying. Not only because each new OS fucks up the boot of some others (ie windows doesnt like grub), and XP refuses to get installed past a certain cylinder index, etc. Just use virtualbox or virtualpc to play with them, its not like you should be doing anything else with them, ey?
