[semi-solved] Stuck in POST/probably RAM-issue

Postby ErikKiller on Wed Nov 13, 2013 7:11 pm

Hey guys, just changed the PSU on my desktop + upgraded a bunch of components (rear fan, CPU-fan + heatsink, more RAM)
Now, the PSU is 500W Whitenergy and works nicely; the fans also spin up. I think it's the RAM that's causing me grief.

I have an ancient Intel board D915PCM (page 20 for RAM-related info): http://downloadmirror.intel.com/15189/e ... odSpec.pdf

I bought the following RAM:
A-Data DDR2 PC-6400 800MHz CL5 1GB Blue Heatsink
memory type: DDR2
package - memory pin: 240
package - memory format: Unbuffered-DIMM
density: 1GB
ic configuration: 64x16
speed rating: PC-6400 800MHz
cas latency: 5
working voltage: 1.8V +/- 0.1V

The voltage matches up, the ic configuration I THINK matches up, unbuffered-DIMM works for D915PCM.
Theoretically the 800MHz should be "backwards compatible" and run at 677(?)
The total I can use is 4GB, I have 4 sticks of 1GB, is that my pitfall?
I assume the error here is that I have four 64x16 which is not a supported DIMM configuration?
Should I get 2x2GB or just revert to 2x1GB which MIGHT work?

The PC boots up, everything works, no beep codes but just gets stuck at the POST image.
USB nor legacy keyboards function.

My case is ridiculously tiny and I want to get the theory side down before I start unplugging shit again.

Have you tried removing the Bios backup battery to see if it posts without it?. It would force the board back into failsafe.

It was RAM. Now getting heat-related issues with the CPU. Prolly not enough thermal paste.
