Model Battles - Suggestions

Postby RawMeat3000 on Tue Mar 03, 2009 10:43 pm

Alright after a long bout of procrastination, I'm going to get these model battles going again. Since these aren't official battles, I figured I shouldn't use the official suggestion thread and make my own. So, lads and lasses, this is where you can drop your suggestions for future model battles. But I plan on having a lot more than just speed challenges. Poly limit, extended (1-2 week) scene making competitions, texturing, and maybe a some rendering challenges (unlikely, but it's a thought).

These battles are going to be diverse, and by golly they're going to be fun and exiting. So put your game faces on and get suggestin'.

Like a monitor with a skin showing pseudo code? Or perhaps a procedurally generated solid mesh... oooo

I'm sorry, programmers are strictly forbidden from entering. We've got to have principals, you know.

Now move along, we don't want trouble.

Well, weekend is coming up, so freetime for everyone!

Uhh theme suggestion from me?

Uhhhh. How about the theme is "old school" Where we model things that are now obsolete, like the cotton gin, and Ball mice :)

Alright then, Old School it is. The challenge is to make something that is now obsolete in the face of new technologies. I'm getting anxious to start another challenge so I'll do it this weekend. I'll start it Friday night (my time, which is wacky, GMT -10) so the thread will be up for all our European friends on Saturday morning. It'll run till about Monday 9:00 am GMT.

Same rules as the old speed challenges, modeled in 2 hours, post render (I'm fooling around with the idea of banning renders all together [but not for this challenge!]), wireframes, and a poly count. Nothing textured, and preferably nothing more than a simple ambient occlusion pass. Hope I haven't missed anything.

Hope to see you all there!

I'm thinking "Fortification" for the next speed battle. So far in these competitions we've only been doing single props. Fortification would be more of a scene making challenge, with spikes, gates, sandbags, etc. It would be a lot more challenging though and I'm not sure if everyone would be up for it.

oh man, that'd be cool. But I think it would only be as challenging as the entrant wants it to be.

Plus, if the theme is was fortification then I suppose someone could make one prop that's clearly on the theme, like a catapult, or a crumbling wall, I think it should remain an option, even though it's a scene modeling challenge at heart :)

I was driving home today and I saw a wheelbarrow and an old shovel in a garden
so I thought gardening would be a fun idea for the next modelling challenge

lol, yeah, that would be cool. One vote for gardening tools.

And just to toss an idea of my own out there, what about the theme being around fire or heat, whether it's a stove, a flamethrower or a radiator :D

I'm sure someone could think of a cute name for it.
