Totally in for modelling challenges, as long as I can find time around my EVERYTHING ELSE. So I'll phase in and out but wouldn't be a staple. It looks like the lopers modelling section is traditionally pretty unsuccessful though.

Oi! What's the deal with the modelling challenges? I'd like to be in on one at least. May I suggest something short and sweet to get the ball rolling? I'd like to suggest a theme as open as "steampunk" but in order to narrow it down to a ballpark lets make it "steampunk kitchen appliances". Given that both steam and cooking require heat, hopefully it won't be too hard to come up with a contraption. I'm thinking self-flipping pancake makers, perfect coffee machines and automatic wine racks.

Can I also suggest that we make a game ready asset? Bonus points for getting it an engine of your choice, but at least have it textured. And if that is the case then a higher time limit? I think if the challenges were a bit less restrictive more people would have a chance to participate.

A steampunk general challenge would be nice, but I've lost a lot of the enthusiasm for modelling and doing these challenges that I used to have. If I were to start another one, I'd make it so that there would be no time limit, and there would be no restriction on the software used, so composting in Photoshop for better presentation would be totally OK, and lighting it in a real time engine would be fine too. Inspired in a large part by the various Polycount challenges they have going on. You should have something to put in your portfolio at the end of it all. Entries would still be voted on.

How many people would actually join though?

I have an 8800GT that the winner can have. And a broken CPU heat sink, and about 16mb in assorted ramsticks and other old superseded junk. Takers?

I think I still have an ATI 4850 at my sisters house that she hasn't sold yet. Shipping would suck to the EU though, I'd rather just buy someone a game, assuming prizes are even an option. There's still the potential for abuse, ever after the safegaurds implemented a few years ago.

Yeah maybe make it a game on steam to a certain value. Like $10 or something. Wait why do we need a prize? The prize is furthering your skills, dammit!

fuck that, I'm only in it for the cash (and the pussy).

but honestly, if there was good steep competition I'd enter for free, I'm just afraid that I'll spend a bunch of time modeling and the final poll will be between me and two other guys.

also, if there do end up being prizes, we need to sort out the voting so we don't get the kind of funnybusiness we had in this competition where smithy herded in a bunch of his friends to vote for his entry

Why would that be a problem, you love having a pole between you and two other guys. HA!

But seriously I'll give away a steam game up to $10 to the winner if we get a comp going with at least three people. If I win then I win $10 not spent on a steam game.

Looks like I'll be starting one tomorrow. The first modelling challenge in well over a year.
