DMC 1 - Gaudy sign for storefront/building

Postby RawMeat3000 on Sun Jun 28, 2009 10:34 am

Here is the first of the daily modelling challenges, for everyone's enjoyment. Here you will be creating a sign for some sort of business or organization. Try to make it as flashy and conspicuous as possible.

To get you started, some Google images

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&s ... ns&spell=1
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&s ... 21&ndsp=21

As for the rules, you must be using an actual modelling program, no level editors, and please don't reuse any previously made models. That is all.

This challenge will end in 5 days, somewhere in the Thursday-Friday divide. Although I guess nothing is stopping anyone from making something after that, since I might not lock these threads. We'll see.

You can texture, you can import into a game engine, you can do most anything. The whole point is to just make something for practice, and I didn't want a bunch of pesky rules getting in the way of practicing.

So there are none.

Oooh, texturing it seems like much better practice than the high polygon shit that you're never going to use in engine from the other challenges.

Well if you're going to allow textures then probably. Texturing it will also get people to be more poly conservative unless they want a retarded UV.

They always did.

Animated texture are just like any other texture, but animated. I don't see why they should work.

In fact for the neon sign in my map battle entry, I as initially planning to have an animated texture, with one arrow flashing in and out. In the end, though, baking textures didn't go as planned to I decided to pass the idea.

you can have them, but they should generally be avoided as I see it. Each frame takes up the same amount of memory as a regular texture (so you better be using compressed VTFs)

Source has a few material proxies that can help you achieve simple effects, without using an animated texture.
