Speed Challenge 27 - Aquatic Life (Extended Oct. 2)

Postby RawMeat3000 on Sat Sep 26, 2009 9:07 am

Building on the crustaceans theme from the suggestion thread, I came up with this one because it gives much more freedom to create what you want. You're still free to create crustaceans, but also shipwrecks with schools of fish swimming through a torn hull, coral reefs with sea anemones and star fish. Try to focus only on model detail in this battle, a couple orange and blue lights are fine, but the main purpose here is to hone your modelling skills. I've got something extra planned for this week that should give you plenty of time for extra detail. Hint hint, wink wink. Subtle, subtle.

The last 5 or so battles have been slow, so I took the previous week off. I'm sure no one minded. Hell, I bet no one even noticed.

The rules have changed a wee bit, but remain much the same as ever.

Post renders, wireframes, triangle/polygon/verticie counts (definitely triangle counts, other two optional) and time spent in this thread.

This battle will cease to live at the same time Sunday the 27th dies and turns to Monday the 28th. Midnight for the dense among us. Remember that's midnight Pacific Standard Time, which is GMT-8. For more timezones see here.

*Splash splash splash*

...goes the drowning model battle. Drowning in a sea of apathy.

Raw i just now saw this. Not every interloper checks this site everyday and has the time to commit to the challenge on such short notice. You posted one day before the deadline, i hardly think that's enough time for us to make/submit something. Make the deadline a week from the day you announce the challenge and you'll have a lot more people entering the challenge. You leave the vote poll up 4-5 days after most people have voted but you give us less than two days to complete the challenge? help us help you!

You're probably right about giving more time, the way things are now, I'm just continuing the tradition passed down to me by Barrakid and Jest@, unquestioning. And in the beginning, when I first started the battles back up, 2 days used to be enough to get up to... I think the most ever was 7 entries. In two days.

But things have changed somehow. The last 4 battles received 2 entries each, and this one got 0, so you're probably right. We all just need more time. (even I didn't make anything, that's a first [I don't count the DMC's because they suck]).

SO! I'll extend this until.... either Friday or next Sunday. And if it all works out then it's going to be week long challenges from now on. Then after this one I'm going to start some kind of textured battle. Poly-limited or unrestrained, I'm not sure.

But now I'm thinking, maybe this theme just sucks?

Ah great! I wanted to submit something for this one. I just couldn't find the time. Extending the challenges to run for a week is a great idea. Nothing wrong with the theme. :)

source-maps, work on it a bit more if you have the time. Defining the head, adding eyes and a blowhole. Flattening the fins and the tail. Great basic shape though!

Couldn't let you guys have all the fun. I made a time lapse too, which i'll probably upload somwhere. Does this deserve it's own time lapse? No, but it was fun.
