My final entry, it took 2 hours max but I went over when rendering by 40 minutes. I actually finished the geometry and effects in an hour but I encountered an alpha map glitch which took me a while to fix and then the render took fricken ages and in the end the bloody oil alpha went all weird on me with that brown outline and there isn't any brown in the bloody texture. Oh and I just realised there's a glitch with the surface not blending into background. Hell if I'm rendering that again.

Anyway my inspiration was this oil crisis going on at the moment.

I used this tut here for water effects: http://www.polygonblog.com/3d-underwater-scene

Times up for me, so I guess these are finals.

Time
170 Minutes, or nearly 2:50

View port Renders
(Mainly because I didn't have much time left for a proper render.)

662 Triangles were used in the making of this rusty oil drum.

Things I need to work on for the next battle, texturing, real renders and mainly my speed, but this was pretty fun even though I doubt I will get any of the main three places.

With all the talk of this challenge being noob friendly I decided to regail you all with my amazing noobish render of an oil barrel, me being a noob I don't know how many triangles were used but please forgive me.
Any ways this took me about 15 minutes to make and render.

As you can see I have no idea how to put textures on things but iI don't really care (I'm just doing this for kicks and grins)

I tried to make a barrel, got bored and made a pretty good penis. Then gave up.

This modelling lark is hard.

Ha, I sorta remembered that somebody worked with cad models of rigs.

How big do those files get, by the way?

Out of curiosity, why would you pick an unbiased renderer for a timed battle? :P

I like coder's best. Only thing I would like for you to improve is the background, besides that, looks great.

I thought it wouldn't matter, but everyone keeps commenting on it. It's just a random pic - the refraction needs something with variation in it to bend about. Is it too late to change it? Or maybe just crop it so most of the background is removed?

Sorry I haven't been more active in here, I'm gonna try and comment on everything right now.

Delta - That's awesome. Add a little specularity in there and that's a winner.

Habboi - You caught me by surprise with this, I really like the image as a whole (and the reference to recent events) and though you might think the light brown edge on the oil leaking out is ugly, I think adds depth to what would otherwise be flat and boring.

Smurftyours - The model is well enough, but I'm not sure that the texture fits, it feels more like rock/concrete. Plus there's some horizontal stretching in there.

Duke - You've come a long way dude! Your modeling skills have improved fucktons from before. That render doesn't look like it should have taken 50 minutes though.

NBRXXN - lol, for 15 minutes I guess I can't complain.

coder - That's great! I wouldn't get rid of the background though, I kind of like it. Anyway it's a speed challenge, it's not supposed to be perfect, just do the best you can in as little time and be proud.

I hope I get to see more from you guys! I know I'll be making something this weekend.

well, after working through some tutorials and manuals, i got this render. ill set this as final, cause theres is so much more to see on this one, than on the old one...

Image

still its not a clean rendering, but its ok.

PS: if someone wants to teach me how to get a good rendering out of the XSI mod tool without any pirated software he/she can do that, it would be very cool!
