Modelling Challenge #3 - A Community Art Pass

Postby RawMeat3000 on Sun Aug 08, 2010 11:36 pm

Now for something a little different. With the community map int_house going around wouldn't it be nice if us modelers got in on the action with a modeler's touch? This is what we're aiming for in the industry fellas, let do a practice run of an actual art pass and model the shit out of this map!

So basically what I'm thinking is that you can do one of three things here, just to give ideas
a. Model prop they don't have yet in the map
b. Replace an existing prop with something of your own
c. Convert complex brushes into a prop and add it back in

I hosted the latest version of the map here for you guys to download, you'll need it.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/k2mpe7nyi ... _House.rar

Some rules first before we start:

You model must be made in 4 hours or less. So basically if you're not finished by then just take a screenshot at 4 hours and submit it. You can finish it later and pimp it all over the site.

You can't reuse old models

You must post wireframes and renders here (limit of 3 images), along with triangle counts, amount of time taken and all the properly compiled files (remember it's for Episode 2, so use the 2007 Source Engine).

You screenshot must be taken ingame with the prop in its proper place, so if you model a table don't put it in the middle of the street.
The final entries will be voted on. And I know I always say this, but there's a possibility of a prize at the end of the road for this battle. If we can get more than, say 5 serious entries (excluding mine of course). What that prize will be I do not know.

This challenge will end it two weeks on Sunday night, August 22th.

Props to sourcemaps for the idea, he is credit to team.

Time for some modelan.

I'm not so sure that having a time limit and a competition would work best for a community art pass. We should just make attempts at creating assets for the map rather then having another timed modeling challenge.

The only limit is yourself. I just want us to create models for this map then show our progress at 4 hours. Finishing it is up to you after that.

Maybe I should just leave out the part about uploading model files?

I was just thinking what's the point of making people upload their files if they aren't finished?
I'll make it optional.

I was thinking about making a badass expansive skybox, but I guess that wont work cause I don't know where the edge of the level is going to be :(

Maybe some suburban vehicles will do, so we don't have to flood the streets with all those broken down jalopies.

im going to create a rollercoaster and an additional downloadable rollercoaster trail pack, so you can puzzle your own coaster. well, that reminds me in the good old days of "rollercoaster tycoon"...

Well you have two options,

1. you download the map and figure out the boundaries (I think you can set up Max's grid for Hammer Units)

2. Make all the pieces modular? Like build small sections of buildings, then import them all and place them as needed.
(Makes it easier to make the map bigger also, people could move stuff around to accommodate.)
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen

Roller coaster, brah. And if no one else minds I think I'm gonna start on converting the basketball hoops to models. I've had my eye on those for the past few days.

at first it would be like a visual attraction. i guess that im not able to finish this in the timeline of 4hrs, but im going to do this one as an seperate model pack. it took a lot of time to figure out the seizes and dimensions to let it be in relistic dimensions and to have fitting peices for puzzleing an own track. this one is just for the battle, but more awesome combinations will be possible when im done with the pack...
