DoR - Chapter 2 (SP)

Postby Hyper Trance on Wed Jan 24, 2007 6:25 pm

Yes, of course the adventure will continue! :P
This time you'll face more and stronger enemies. You'll get the weapons you didn't get in the first chapter and there will be twice as much action!

As you can see, in the first map you'll pay a visit to a construction site. But you'll spend most of your time inside the building, which is under construction.

First floor, inside the building:

For some reason, the light entitys I inserted in front of the lamps, which are attachted to the roof, didn't show up in-game. I guess I put them to close to the model. So don't worry, the lamps are supposed to emit light.

After your visit inside the building, it's time to burn some rubber...!

I made this thread to get feedback on my development...
So I hope that's what you'll give me! :)

Its looking good, I really like the city and building feel, and how the backgrounds work out - but I feel like the streets are a little empty, and could use some more props to make it not look so empty... for instance in the this screeny:

Thanks for the feedback, Dionysos! :)

Though I did hope, that more people would have something to say about the images I provided...

But I guess if it looks great... you got nothing to complain about! :-D
And also, most people seems to be more interested in MP maps... :(

Not me; I love SP adventures! :-D

Anyways, it looks great. When will the first chapter be out, though? I'm really eager to play it... :?

Hehe, glad I'm not the only one! :P

The first chapter was already supposed to be released... But for some reason, the guy who was supposed to get the files... couldn't find them.

I'll re-send the files ASAP. You see, I'll soon get broadband, so I'm waiting until I get that... then I'll re-send the files. I'm currently using a lousy 56K modem, which means it would take like 2 hours to send the 50 MB zip-file too him...

Hopefully I'll get my broadband next week... or, well, I'm pretty sure I will.
But look at the bright side! During the meantime, I'm working on the 2:nd chapter, so you won't have to wait another 6 months, which it took for me to finish the first chapter.

I guess I can post the download-link both here, and in my other thread under the Finished Maps section.

ooh...plenty to mess with it loooks like. I like how it has an exploration feel to it and yes, that city does look nice. BTW where can I download the first chapter? We need to start seeing more polished levels and artwork in SP games. It looks like your doing that with the city. I like the cranes and the fact that it would take a while to make sure all of your buildings go in the right place. Keep it up!

Looking forward to this one, Kodox

looking good. It's hard to pull off an authentic looking city feel, but your definately on the right path. I have to agree with Dionysos though, it needs a little more... clutter, like a real city.

Looking forward to playing it.

Thanks for the feedback guys! :) I really appreciate it!

I'll see what I can do about the look of the streets.

Here's a little update:

I manage to get the point_spotlights working (I placed them too close to the model).
I've also added some props.
Those black electric cords are not supposed to be hanging there. It didn't look that good, so I deleted them.

Image

Image

I made one the buildings a bit more destroyed.

Image

I haven't been working so much on the outside. But inside the building I've made an elevator shaft and rooms which are under construction.
I'll post new pics as soon I've made a new compile!

Kodox: As I've said, the first chapter isn't available for download yet. The first chapter is finished, but I haven't been able to upload it. But as soon as it's ready for everybody to download, I'll post the link!

Looking good. However, I would say there's still a bit of a flat feel to a lot of the buildings, especially vertically. maybe there's just not enough to set the buildings back from the street (stoops, railings, low walls etc) and not quite enough of the roof clutter that buildings tend to have...or maybe the streets are a bit too wide. I'm not sure, but something feels too flat about them. It's like...90% there, just not quite clicking.

A small update: 14/2-2007

The building is more destroyed and the destruction is a bit more detailed.

Image

Here's a decal I've made.

Image

This is the inside of the building. (The two first pictures shows the same floor).

Image

Image

Image

The building itself.

Image

As you can see, I changed the light inside the tunnel.

Image

Does someone knows how to fix this:
(As you can see the fog inside the 3D Skybox, isn't blended with the fog inside the 2D skybox).

Dunno If I have already mentioned this but that destroyed building looks awesome! Ohio is under a lvl 2 for snow and school is closed so I have nothing better to do today...erm...so I have a few questions.

How long does it take to compile with those spotlight entities? and... Where did you get a reference for the inside construction site?

Also on the destroyed building maybe you should take that entire corner area off. You have two holes separated by that corner. And,you might try having the roof either sag down a bit OR try making it look like it's been blasted partially away and all thats left is some steel beams protruding where the corner of the roof should be....just a thought.

I don't know if it's due to the spotlights, but for the time being, it acctually takes 1 hour and 50 minutes to compile everything. I have to compile with the expert settings though, because of that "objects falling through displacements" bug (maybe that has an effect on the compile time, maybe not). Of course the spotlights doesn't have the "Dynamic light" flag checked!

Well, first I tried to search the internet for good reference pictures. But I couldn't find any good ones. Then I remembered that in Max Payne 2, you visit a construction site. So I played that part, took some screenshots, and used them as reference.
If you want to take a look, here they are:

Image

And since you don't visit any construction site in Half Life 2, I don't have any models or textures which would suit 100% for that situation. So there are a lot of brushwork.

I'll take your suggestions in consideration!
