Old Washroom Scene

Postby Generalvivi on Wed Sep 03, 2008 8:32 am

This scene is a semi old one that I decided to dig up to better hone my scene development skills. Blue/white brick texture was made by PhilE from interlopers.net , and roof ac unit was made by bitmap , all other custom models / textures were made by me.

This is still wip and will hopefully be finished soon! I will be working on it back and forth with my current portal map.

Starters!

Quick texture test to get a feeling for the scene

Another quick pass for temp lighting

Big change in layout of the interior proved to be a good decision and helped bring out the theme for the building.

Quick template brush stuff

Now start applying it to the exterior of the building

After that quick compile test I continued the look

More to come soon! Still needs a lot of work! Hopefully this is a step in the right direction ^^!

Looks like a great start man. Do you have gameplay planned or is this just an art scene?

vivi, when you make the original brushwork do you take into account the props available to you that finish the scene, or are the props something you decide upon after the brush work is done.

Just a scene atm but it is apart of a bigger map with a finished layout. Currently I'm just trying to get my set dressing skills to a higher level.

Most of the time I usually take into account that I have certain props or that I want certain props in the map, but this time the idea came to me about halfway through making the interior gameplay.

There are two things that immediately stood out to me.

One, the ladder that runs up the side of the building seems large. Maybe my sense of scale is thrown off without context in the pic, but it's certainly as wide as a window.

Two, I like the general look of the washroom interior, but I'm not a fan of the colors. It's too desaturated, "brown is real" for me. Very subjective thing I know, but desaturation is to the 2000s like pastel neon glows were to the 1980s. It's not an issue of lighting, however. I think if the materials used in the room had some more color variance in them, the scene would stand out more. Bring out the greens in the support beams, for example. Make the walls just a bit more yellow. Then, when you fill the room with that light, you'll have the same overall effect, but elements of the scene ought to "pop" more.

Looks fantastic! I would maybe change up that stain decal inside of those bottom arches, looks repetitive.

interior shots = old :(

Still working on it tho, will try and get some more fun stuff done tonight. I was going to try and break up the walls a bit more and add some signs in and more pipes. Hopefully once I'm done with that ill put in more ontrasty ish items.

Looking great Vivi! You always have some really nice brushwork, good to see your taking it to a new level. Looks like your going to hit the limit pretty soon though :O

One crit though, what's with those decal curvy lines on the interiors floor? I couldn't tell if they were stains from a cart or some sort of track or something.

Looking great, hope to see some more screens soon!!! Makes me want to try out a scene with lots of nice brushwork.
