Third person singleplayer map - Novafall

Postby Hemuuuli on Tue Dec 09, 2008 7:32 pm

I wanted to try make a thirdperson map in hammer... and I think that I did well! ^^'

I used fixed camera locations for couple of reasons:
- Creating right mood
- Helping player to spot important things
- Camera won't get inside the walls

You play as a combine who has been assinged to his new job in Nova Prospect, but even before he finds his new office antlions attack into the Nova Prospect. You have no guns or friends. You must find your way out!

This is first part of combine's small adventure. I'll do rest (2) if this one gets enought positive/constructive feedback.

Ps. If there are other "real" third person maps I'd be happy to try them out so point me into right direction.

the diagonal camera is cool for artistic effect, but if the camera is diagonal in every scene, it will get annoying, just my opinion.

Agreed. After playing it I found it hard to play with the tilted camera half the time. But other than that and the antlion chase scenes with no weapon that were scaring me that I did some thing wrong I found nothing wrong with it.

Yeah. I can agree that there was a couple of unnecessary hard camera angles because I was testing diffrent camera placements in the map. If you could point the hardest cameras I could avoid making same mistakes again. Oh, and was it allways clear where to go?

I am happy that I was scaring someone. I think that I have succeeded if I can create so strong emotions. Actually I was tring to make a semi-surivalhorror map (really about surviving, because there is no weapons) and when my girlfriend played this she couldn't finish it - antlion chases were too frightening, but in other hand she is afraid of turrets in Portal.

I played through it but I stopped after 2 minutes, there are too many bugs in it, and it's not easy to move...

Could you be move specific? I didn't have proplems with moving or did you use tried using mouse instead of wasd (at the beginning of the map I adviced to use only wasd and shift)? Moving animations are the best that I was able to find and I really can't understand that you encountered too many bugs. o.O

I can fully understand that you dislike my camera angles and that moving is a bit akward (if you want run you must be walking before pressing shift, just like in hl2 etc.). HL2 + Hammer without modding isn't really designed for third person, but I like to make experiments.

The movement was really annoying, I could move, but it was really hard to reach a certain point, maybe it's my fault, and I should just keep trying until I get used to it. What I think is that you have released your project way too early, and that you should try to make the 3rd person movement more natural, and easier to use...

From only look on screenshots and basic knowledge of source engine...
Movement system is the one from the good Resident Evil series (Good series: RE1, 2,3 Bad Series, 4 and upcomming 5). Am I right ?

I'm not so much into RE so I can't compare, its like in Silent hill. The cameras aren't static, they follow player from fixed locations. A bit like security cameras that follow movement. I think that moving feels odd because games like Re and Sh are typical for consoles and if people play them on computer they use pads. Hmm... I should try map with controller sometime.

Now I didn't mean it like "OMG! BOO!" scared. But more in the sense, "Well this sucks. Lets run before we die." Kinda more of an agitated state then scared. Still, it is a good scene.

Not bad but the camera angles are definitely an issue in areas.

Minor spoilers:
When I faced the Antlion Guard I ran around like a buffoon for a while before even noticing the right way to go. It's a bit tricky with that thing bludgeoning you to death!
