memories right here..
http://www.interlopers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=22110.
Hello everybody, this is my first post, so without further a-do,

this is my most recent map here, i messed around with curvature, and texturing. i'm thinking about making it into a quick level for the heck of it, but it would be a totally different atmosphere.

a close up of the new textures

Image

\/ my first map, an apartment, i abandoned it after i learned about using the power of 2 in brushes.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

an attempt at a new york style atmosphere never finished it, but it was fun to look at.

Image

Image

Image

just an experiment with achitecture and skybox. my second most recent, whipped it up in three days, last finish had rain and lightning. it was really cool, had it hooked up to a logic_timer and ran it with random lightning and thunder, was an awesome lighting effect when it worked. had the lights setup in several different locations... but it crashes on loading now, if anyone wants to take a crack at fing the problem i'll post the log at the end.

Image

Image

Image

a test with weather effects, although it was on the last map, until it no longer loads

well thats my current stash, i still need to learn alot of stuff, next up is scripting, ai, and modeling. please feel free to criticize and compliment, i would like to know where i could improve.

-edit-
i'll post the log on request

well i just finished a rough layout of the interchange, still got lots to do, i may just model it to retain the curves, we'll see..
too lazy to cubemap this time.

Image

Image

Image

like i said its a rough layout, so i got a lot of tweaking to do.

edit, is there a reason why there are gaps in the textures? it checked out perfect in hammer, is there a way to make this into a model? i'm relatively new at this [2 mos], so if theres a good tut, please point the way.

that interchange was a real bitch to make. I seriously need to take up some modeling lessons so i can make that again but better.

ALL THE MAPS I'VE LOST BY COMPUTER SHIT PART 1
Yes, there's more than 1 part to this. D:

Image

Image
DE_OMAN, Doesn't look very far in those specific screenshots, but I had more that I never Screen Capped due to insanity. I lost the file due to a terminal windows error, leaving the bsp / vmf / and the custom materials I made for the map for dead.

ZPS_Fossil, gone the way of the dinosaur. For many many reason though, unlike oman. I believe I may still have the VMF file, written somewhere on a disc. The map was filled with errors though, as you can imagine would be the case when the map has a million brushes for the wood boards. If only I knew how to model back then. Oh and this map goes WAAAAY far back. I think this was my second real map attempt ever, which is very nastalgic.

WAY OLD PROJECTS UNTITLED OR I JUST DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ANYMORE:

There's even more on my other computer I think, I just got all the shit I had sitting around my photobucket album. I really have gone a long way though, some of that stuff was enough practice for me just to be where I am at right now. Anyway, off to bed then.

As a graphics, customer service rep, and IT guy (I fill a lot of gaps at work) I have to say
BACK UP YOUR FILES

Get this
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=726

Worth every penny.

Are you too cheap for that?

Get this

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 1672069828

You'll fit a F***ton of maps, textures, and models on 2 gigs.

No excuses, go now, I'll wait.

*EDIT*

You want to go REAL Ghetto?

Get a Gmail account, it has like 7 gigs of storage space for free.

Send mail to yourself with your maps / files as attachments. (Don't set it to POP though)

 Yep

To put back on my IT hat this list goes from best advice to worst. Those hard drives rarely fail, your flash drive can fail, or it can get corrupted, or you could step on it on accident. Sending it through mail is just asking for corruption during transfer, losing the email, accidentally deleting it, your E-mail provider loses it etc...

Though in full disclosure though GMail has never lost an email or corrupted a file. I've got Maya files I sent myself back in 2006 I can download off of Gmail and work perfectly still.
It's quite simple really. I want to be a professional level designer. I want this to be my job.

Great advice, so simple as well. I really don't know why more people don't backup there data, its simple to do, and when you get to doing it everyday, it will become part of your routine.
