About two weeks ago, I started on a map I called "The Freeman Institute" I had intended on it being a mental hospital in honor of Gordon Freeman. but after running into some optimization problems, and a dramatic drop in FPS in the middle of the map as compared to the rest, I'm considering ditching it altogether, and trying a new direction. This would have been my first indoor map with multiple rooms, I've mainly been doing killboxes and arena style maps, and before anyone asks, yes it was for HL2:DM..

Some Screenies:

I had alot of custom content in there that I had picked up from various sources. Maybe after I understand optimization better, I'll pick this back up and finish it. But, after two years, im no better at optimizing now, then i was then. :(

IDK maybe if you post a BSP someone can tell you why the performance is bad in the middle room.

A VMF would be a damn sight more useful.

It probably just needs some func_details and hint brushes.
THIS is the best guide on optimization I've found. Set aside a few hours and just read through it, it does a great job explaining things.

well, at first glance you really need to func_detail all of those ceiling braces.
Check the doorways with the large glass windows. Only part of them is func_detail, the whole thing (including the itty-bitty wall pieces) need to be detailed.
The reason (my guess, at least) that those commons areas are lagging like crazy is because each one is connected via straight hall to one another. Try adding occluders (see the guide) at the ends of those long hallways. make SURE you start adding hint brushes around corners like they show in the guide. This will really help to separate the rendered areas.

NEED MORE

TBH I haven't mapped for the longest time now. :(

Lost all interest for the time being unfortunately. Hopefully I will stop putting off making some texture and tree/rock models. That will get me working again.

95% of my maps go here, only one i've ever finished is for a mod i'm making lol. Pics:

This was my first map EVER. I had most everything down. (exept the hideously terrible texture allignment) It failed, however, because I could not think of any puzzles to add to the map that were original at the time. :P

Image

This next one's from the same map, and the puzzle still isn't finished. The room suffers from laziness to fix the textures (At the time) as well as a very twitchy box button.

Image

The next one was a rather far-fetched attempt to create animation by use of func_doors and func_door_rotating's. Backfired horribly: It works, but it hardly looks good. I may use the actual mech (static) for something though.

Image

This last one was a BTS room meant to be connected with the first map, but I never got around to combining them. As you can see, my texturing skills were still rather poor.

Image

And to prove i've gottten signifigantly better:

Oh cool! A place where I can show off my terribly designed never-even-attempted-to-compile airport map!!

hah I'll try and see if I can come up with some pics to put here sometime soon.

Also, some of these maps in here look incredible! I'm so very jealous of all you talented mappers. But why are they in this thread if they're so perfect and finished looking?
