hl2 ep2: Rabbit Hole

Postby PuLSaR on Sun Jun 19, 2011 7:41 pm

This is the first time I map for Source engine (I'm a quake mapper). Here are some screenshots of the map pack I hope I'll release in a month or two. It starts as classic hl2 world and then Gordon goes deeper underground and it turnes into something more Quake-ish.

This actually looks pretty cool. Mapping is okay. It really reminds me of some of the first HL2 mods. And how they were creative in locations and didn't have any custom content. Very cool stuff.

that's some interesting brushwork you've got there.

If you pass me the VMF a few days before release, I'll do an optimizing pass for you. If you're a quake era mapper then I doubt you're too well versed with source optimization, and that looks like a lot of brushwork.

stoopdapoop, well I messed around with optimisation for some time. Do you mean areaportals and all that stuff? If you could help it would be good.
btw I'll need some betatesters in a week or two

I could probably tell you were a Quake mapper from some of these shots, they've got a lot of "Quake" characteristics in them, which is cool.

Like this one.

yeah, areaportals, hint/skip brushes, func detailing, occluders, and any other kind of visibility control.

I really, really dig this.

And I love the theme you're going for.

I like it, too. It has some basic brushwork/detailing compared to the average screenshot you see around here. But that´s perfectly fine because otherwise everything looks the same. This got both the feel of HL2 and Quake (I find the latter game terribly boring) but your combination has its charm.

Func_detail is especially important for a map like this. Lots of complicated brushwork throughout. I don't think the overall performance would be impacted if you didn't use it, but compiling would definitely take a hell of a lot longer than it should.

I'm not sure if you looked this up yet, but it would be a great guide to read about optimizing your maps:

ok, I think I'm ready to start the first round of betatesting. I'm not an experienced hl2 player, therefore I need someone who can point me at the gameplay issues since I suppose that people that play custom maps/mods are pretty much hardcore players and difficulty should be adjust for them mostly. Also I need someone to point me at the places that don't fit good in hl2 universe. So I need people.

If your looking for more testers, feel free to send me a PM. I would be honored to betatest for you. (I can also make a video of my playthrough if you like)

Looks cool, I think your lighting needs some work, more contrast maybe.

I am also up for playtesting if you need it.
