Can't change volume or pitch on ambient_generic

Hey there

I'm trying to create basically a piano-type device in Half-Life Ep2. You push the buttons and it plays a sound, and then you can hit another button to have it play back what you've played.

I'd like to make the keyboard by having ten sounds with ten different pitches, but the Pitch property value in ambient_generic doesn't seem to change the sound in any way (I've also messed with Initial Pitch and Spin Up, Spin Down). When I saw that, I tried changing the Volume property, setting it to zero, and the sound still plays at full volume.

My setup is simplicity itself: func_button>OnPressed>Play Sound(MyTone)

If anyone knows a thread, tutorial or bug report that can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.
