A new challenge - character concept art

Postby 904 on Sat Oct 31, 2009 9:46 pm

Whoops! Time to start another challenge.

Create concept art for a character

What to do?
Create your own visual concept for a character. Since this is interlopers I would expect it to be a game character, but in the end it doesn't really matter for this challenge.

Some basic rules apply:
- if you post images, please mark as w.i.p. or final.
- please do not use profanity, nudity, stuff like that, you get the idea.
- 1 character per entrant
- a maximum of 3 pictures per character.

The battle will run for a week and ends sunday november 8th at NOON. Check here to see the conversion to your own timezone.

Good luck!

Just wondering about the rules here, what are we supposed to use for drawing?

I would think whatever you want. Pen and paper, pastels, painting, photoshop.

What I'm wondering about is how deep we're supposed to go into the character. Should he have a backstory, mannerisms, a paragraph about his personality. I guess we do whatever we want for that too.

I'd assume that since it's an art competition that you're meant to express whatever you can through the drawing, rather than having a paragraph explaining what you're trying to show.

That doesn't express anything about the way he acts or his dialogue though. Someone who has tattoos all over and piercings who always wears black could be one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. If you see just a picture of that though you'd think "That guy looks like a complete douche."

Consider this: if I wanted to put certain limits on this, I would have mentioned it. It's an art challenge, use your best skills to create a character concept. Hell, if you want to want to model it in clay and take a picture, I'm fine with that!

EDIT: I'll clarify the first post, to make clear that we're not in a writing challenge here, but creating a visual concept for a character.

hehe, if I see something gets submitted that I like, then the creator might be getting a PM from me, asking if I could use it as a character for what I'm working on right now. :D

I'm hoping we can do game characters that already exist.

So draw him helping an old lady across the road? The most common mistake that I see in character concept art is the completely groundless notion that it needs to be a person standing completely inertly and expressionlessly on a white background.
Mappers Top Tip #548
Lighting: The arrangement, hue and intensity of one or multiple light sources.
Lightning: A dazzling discharge of electric sparks in the atmosphere, often preceding thunder.

A new challenger arrives..

Postby quero on Sun Nov 01, 2009 11:28 am

Hi there,
because this is my first post here, let me quickly introduce myself.
I'm quero a mapper at beginner-level from Germany and while following this board and of course the map-battles for the past year I've never find myself confident enough to submit something to fit the standards here.
But then I stumbled over this one and well.. I give it a try.
So Hi again and of course apologies for the lack of english.

Cheers

--------------------------------------------------

Well since there's no theme, making some concept art is quite difficult.. so I'll look for some background to establish a fitting character the next few days.
Until that I give you some sketches, nothing special.. just some doodling looking for a theme.
