glad you found my tutorial helpful, even though it doesnt work so far
for your question: yep, thats right. if you import the smd back into maya, the mesh would be imported triangulated.
I don't really have another idea atm what's wrong, if you set the project (so the reference.smd ends up in the right place) and correctly and followed all steps.
One possible workaround could be that you create a layer called "physics" and add the mesh + shape there, then check "expot physics from layer "physics"" in the export settings, maybe that will work atleast. IIRC it exports the same .smd as it would in "reference"
If that neither works for you, I fear the last possible solution could be to reinstall Maya or I could try to help you via teamviewer?
