Half-Life 3 GDC rumours abound

Postby Blink on Fri Mar 29, 2013 4:06 pm

Currently flying around the intertubes are rumours that something interesting was shown by Valve at GDC. Obviously everyone is assuming (or praying) for Half Life 3:

Picked up by PixelEnemy, the first hints come from DICE’s David Goldfarb, lead designer on Battlefield 3. He said he’d seen “something nice” from the developer behind closed doors, to which Marcus Persson, inventor of Minecraft, replied back asking if it was Half Life 3.

“My silence must be interpreted as silence” replied Goldfarb; “Reply to this tweet if hl3 is confirmed,” added Persson. “I will show my answer with some interpretive dance,” said Goldfarb, as if to confirm without confirming. “Look closely.”

More? How about Interceptor Entertainment’s Dave Oshry. “Just got out of a meeting with Valve that was single-handedly worth the trip out here,” he said on Twitter. “You guys are gonna love me for this” – before hinting that a reveal might be “soon”.

Either that or we might finally see Ricochet 2.

Half-Life is overrated and it steals all the attention away from the true masterpiece that is Ricochet.

If HL3 is ever released and I spot one recycled prop or texture I might have to blow up Valve HQ.

I bet it is on the rise. They would try and sneak it in too, what I would love is if they just ended up making some press release on some random weekend saying what is going on in Valve and add in at the very end, a short little sentence that states they are releasing HL 3 over the weekend.

I would laugh so hard because it would just be hilarious if they ended up bringing it up out of the blue, after all this secrecy.

The real question is what impresses a marketing director and lead designer enough that (in the case of Oshry) it made the trip more worth it.

I remember Gabe said something about Steam becoming a bottleneck. Maybe it's about Steam splitting from Valve, the devs/users themselves can use the Steam backend to run their own stores?

I think movie steam out of Valve might be good. Like, half the company is Steam support and development.

The only problem I forsee with Steam and Valve splitting, is Valve losing their comfy safety net of the constant cashflow generated by the 20-50% share they get from each sold game on Steam, thus in time giving them less chance to do experiments like they're doing now (VR,steambox, movies, experimental games, ect ...)

If they do split, I doubt they'll do a direct split; more shift Steam into a subsidiary company, a la developers under publishing houses. Keep the cash flowing nicely, keep a solid team vibe, keep everything nice and mobile.

Or they could just manage it all inside the company.......
