pfft, the GTs are already dirt cheap. Although the new ati cards are dx10.1 compliant where the GTs arnt, cheaper, as well as having similar specs. What's nice is the competition from ATI is going to put a price crunch on the GT, to what degree though is yet to be seen.

IMO 8800GT/ new GTS prices will not fall until 9 series come - Q1 2008. It will be around 200$ forold GTS, around 230$ for GT, new GTS, GTX. On the other hand, old GTS and GTX rices will probably fall a bit when new GTS comes (8800GTS 512MB based on G92 core, like 8800GT) - before Christmas :D

In the event I'm not able to afford an 8800 (or even fit one into my case {the memory is a bit close to the PCI-E slot}) should I go with buying the 8600 now, then SLI-ing later, in a year or so? And since I don't really mind running my games at lower resolutions if it means having all the settings turned up, how long until I have to run my games in an 800*600 window (because that's as far as I'm willing to go), with SLI enabled?

DON'T ever buy a GF 8600, expecially a GTS. They are not worth the money spent. I'd take an used 8800gts instead.

The problem with me buying an 8800 is that
1)I may not be able to afford it (and not just the card itself)
2)If I do buy an 8800 I'll need to upgrade my 300 watt power supply
3)It may not fit on my mobo, because there's a good chance the RAM will be in the way.
4)And if the RAM doesn't fir that means I'll need a new mobo, and maybe new ram, and maybe a new case to fit the mobo, which means I'll have a new computer, which means it might be a better option to go with the 8600, cheaper anyway. I'm not a hard core gamer, I mostly want this card for the Orange Box and to make my modeling apps run faster.

I hear it's difficult to switch from an Nvidia chipset to an ATI, so, I don't know... Plus I'm not sure if an ATI card would be compatible with my motherboard with an integrated Nvidia chip.

edit: That card really makes me rethink my loyalty to Nvidia though...

Yes, it will be compatible. And its bang per buck ratio is WAY higher. The switch is not that hard, you only have to remember Forceware is not for you anymore :D

It's a bit expensive, thats' kind why I was going with the 8600, it's cheap. And it might be too big for my mobo. AND I only have a 300-watt power supply, and only $220 or so to spend.

I stay away from ATI purely out of protest for their complete and total lack of support for Linux. Trying to get mesa/ogl to work on a Radeon 9800 was one of the hardest things I've ever done with a computer... I guess it didn't help that the Raeon had a bad memory chip or two, but still, it was horrible. Nvidia has incredible drivers and great support for Linux, so I love them.
i had fun once, and it was awful.

quad core cpus will go mainstream, directx 10.1 will become the standard, flash hdds will slowly replace classic hdds as they get larger and cheaper...

that's all I can think of off the top of my head right now

The 9000 series from Nvidia will be out (this month?), by then. But my guess is they'll be $400-$600. If you're going all out, get those.

In August 2008:
- DDR3 will be about 20-30% of mainstream;
- GeForce 8 and Radeon HD 3xxx series will rule the low and mid end
- GeForce 9 for high end (dunno about the Radeons)
- 45nm CPUs mainstream (I dont think quad core will be mainstream)
- You will be able to see the looming shadow of Nehalem and new Intel socket and chipset
