Advanced brush-based machinegun (reload-feature!)

Postby The Ace on Wed Dec 12, 2007 10:55 pm

Hey yo!
I have been gone from Interlopers (and mapping :() for too long, however yesterday my imagination kicked in again. The result? Another gun emplacement prefab from me!

The main goal here was to create a weapon that featured a magazine of rounds, and could be reloaded and resupplied with ammunition boxes (rather than just firing on and on forever, like other stationary weapons in HL2). I'd say I was very successful :)
In addition to this, I have made more eye candy such as more detailed brushwork, bullet casings spitting out and some other.

Old:
Pictures (notice the ammo crate):

Newer version:

Improvements include a buffed-up look of the gun (less skinny) and an ammunition crate with physics (can be tossed around like you'd expect and still spawns ammoboxes).

DOWNLOAD!

HOW TO:
Press the colorful button to spawn a zombie hoard, and try the gun! When the magazine is depleted (150 rounds per box, this can easily be changed), the gun will 'click' and stop firing.
Pry the now-empty box off with crowbar/gravgun/other, open the nearby ammunition crate and grab a new box, simply attach it to the gun on the appropriate place and you're good to go again :)
This can be repeated over and over again (the ammuniton crate will spawn more ammo boxes when you open/close the lid).

This gun/system coule be used in a thousand diffirent ways - Survival maps, DM's, attached to a vehicle...
Feel free to use this in your own maps, all I ask for is credit and notification!

Please try it and leave comments :)

Enjoy!

The reload feature isn't that advanced, but it's original. Good work I guess. The gun just looks ugly and skimpy though.

Good work.

Guess I can work more on it tomorrow, however displaying awesome brushwork was not the point of this release :P

That could be an awesome co-op gameplay mechanic.

My thought exactly. Possibly a singleplayer one.
All my map projects seem to stall, however...

That's what we on Interlopers like to call....lazyness!

Nah - everyones done that. Keep working at it and you'll make a break through sooner or later.

And in regards to the machine gun - I think if you developed a better looking tripod then it'd be much nicer.

Thats well-thought, :P it will add some more gameplay into a mod or map

also you might want to create a model for that gun and it's tripod, or maybe somebody else wants to make one for you.

Would if I could, but I know no modeler (tried to learn Milkshape once but I was clueless, no newbie tutorials).

This is... exactly what I need for my map. All you need is a rocket launcher that you need to manually load rockets in. Good work!

very original.
you could prolly script an NPC to do the reloading for you, so you gota wait for him to reload the gun. i know its a bit different to loading it yourself and kinda defeats the point, but would be quite interesting. And if the NPC dies, you gota do it yourself. or sumit like that.
just an idea :)

I haven't tried it yet, but from what you've shown and told, it looks very good. The idea itself is good enough alone, but you actually brought it to life! Keep at it!
