Q9450 - is not out yet, and is not going to be available in coming weeks.
P35-DS4 or X38-DS4 - I have had both, now I'm on X38-DS5; unless you want Crossfire, stick with P35-DS4. X38-DS4 price is not justified.
Corsair RAM - very nice
Video card - 8800GT, or if you have the money for GTX - go for GTS 512 instead of GTX.
As for PSU, a brand 500W will suffice, unless you have zillion HDDs :D I'd recommend Corsair HX520, Enramx Liberty 500, or PCP&C Silencer 610 (if you want your PSU to last a lifetime :D )

Talked my friend into buying my PC for the price it would take to build a new one for me. He accepted. Anyways, here's the build I plan on:

Raidmax Katana ATX Full Tower - link
ABIT AX78 AM2/2+ 770 ATX Mobo - link
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Windsor 3.0GHz DualCore - link
Corsair XMS 2GB (2x 1GB) DDR2 Dual Channel - link
ECS GeForce 9600GT 512MB - link

Then I'm buying him a 635W PS and swapping my 680W for myself, giving him my old 150GB SATA and keeping my spare 250GB Ultra ATA, giving him my old Hanns-G 19" widescreen LCD and buying myself a new Acer 20".

How much for all this you might ask? Below 900$. I love newegg.

Anyone have some suggestions for a power supply which is modular and OC friendly in the price range of 150-200$. Ive myself looked at the Corsair HX520/620, but is there any other powersupplies out there ?

No extreme overclocking, though i have watercooling.

Enermax Liberty or Infiniti should be in similar price. Also Mushkin 550150 (650W) is modular and in that price range but not of as high quality as Enermax or Corsair HX.

Outside the realm of competitive benching or multisocket servers, what would you want that Corsair HX1000 for?

Long term solution. As i dont want to change my powersupply as new hardware arrives.

What's your new hardware? A refrigerator?

Honestly, with CPU's being less power hungry, GPU's not getting very hungry, etc., 1000Watts is obscene and wasteful. You can run an SLI system on a 600W PSU with no problem. Hell, the 8800GTX only sucks about 170W at max and the e6850 only draws ~75W (the new penryn chips draw even LESS)
Even adding 5 case fans won't add much more power.

A 1,000W PSU wastes more power, and you couldn't POSSIBLY build a system in the next 3 years that would need 1,000W. Stop trying to inflateyour ePenis and buy a sensible PSU ffs.

~Jason

Edit: Just found this: An overclocked FX-60, 8800GTS SLI system uses only 433W under full load and the C2D uses 60W LESS power at stock. You could Add a freaking THIRD GPU on a 600W PSU and still have breathing room.

While this is true in general, it can create some confusion about the details.
First a picture made by myself on this years CeBIT:
Image
This is an Enermax Modu 625 power supply powering four CPUs, 16 FB-DIMMS, 16 hard drives and GeForce 7950GX2 - and it's working perfectly fine.
Second, my system (Q6600 @ 3600, 2 DIMMs, 2x HD3850, 3 hard drives) consumes:
200W at idle
280W when crunching WCG at all four cores
340W when both GPUs and all cores are loaded
My PSU is Corsair HX620.
When determining your PSU wattage needs, you have to consider that:
- most PSU's have peak efficiency at 50-60% of their maximum load
- PSU wattage is NOT a fact; it's a RATING chosen by manufacturer. Every PSU has a sticker with maximum current draw and distribution for each line - that's what is important, because weaker brand PSU will have same rating for lower max current draw. Better brand PSU's are rated at 50°C, which the usual working temperature of PSU in standard case - max current draw and voltage stability will decrease with rising temperature.
That's why my PSU is 620 W even though my PC doesnt draw that much power, and thats why you shouldn't buy a 350W noname PSU and expect it to power a rig like mine.
