Why does it matter what happens after death? Enjoy your life to the very last moment. And the next moment won't matter because you won't be there to experience it.

I'm surprised at the number of people who voted for heaven/hell and another life, it seems like people at a technologically based community like this wouldn't believe in that.

i stick with all of the above, having something to belive in will not harm anyone. And in times when you face great troubles you can actually find it quite helpful. I see no point in saying there is or isn't life after death, either way you'll find out. So I'll stick with believing in somthing, because it is better than not having anything. I will note however, with question 12 i think, where everyone will share views with you... I would like that if all the fundie extremists of all beliefs including atheism were eliminated , simply because you would only have people left who don't care who's what.

It has nothing to do with technology. I don't even think it has to do with intelligence. Many of the smartest people I've known had some religious background. I think it's more of an intellectual laziness more than anything. Many religious people are smart enough to realize that there is probably no god(s) or afterlife, but do not question their beliefs enough to come to this conclusion.

No, you wouldn't. You'd have the same old thing again and again. You will never have people who don't care who's even if religion were to be removed entirely (alas).

And fundamentalists may have the power, but only as long as everyday people follow and support them. Atrocities may be commited from a fundamentalist viewpoint, but they are carried out by people who are just like you and me.

They have some sort of ailment in life that brings them pain. Could be an illness or handicap or maybe the people around them are assholes. They make it really hard to cope with life and they think that dieing is the only way that can escape from whatever was bringing them pain.

I have a friend on Steam who is suicidal at times... He says that life doesn't seem worth living at times (He has some problems that I wont go into,) and that death is the only solution. I've never actually met him, but I'll be damned if I don't come close to crying when he gets like that...
In other words, it feels like the best/only way out of the persons living hell, or what-not.

I hate when people say that suicide is a selfish thing to do.

qft. I mean, it's their life, and when they get into a state like that, you cannot on top of the pain they probably endured blame them for ruining other peoples lifes, it's not them that died. Regardless of whether it was the right thing to do to kill yourself, because usually people just can't see straight anymore and need help out of a vicious cycle.

It matters because many people choose actions during their life based on what they believe will happen afterwards. Sometimes these chosen actions are very negative. It actually sounds a little selfish the way you say it. In other words: Do what you want, and damn the consequences. Screw everyone else, at least you won't have to deal with the results.

If there is no life after death, no you wont find out.

You say "believe in something" as though people who don't believe in something supernatural have nothing to believe in. What about believing in reality, humanism, and the capacity of man to overcome the challenges of life without needing to resort to supernatural beliefs. Those all sound wonderful to me.

Eliminating all except those who don't care what to believe is ridiculous, especially atheists. I suppose every infant should be killed, because until they are indoctrinated they don't believe in a deity either. What's so great about people who don't care?

Agreed, but there's more. These people value their beliefs more than their own reason.

The human species is the only that doesn't have the right to die. It's illegal in most places, though there are now a couple of places that do permit it with the proper procedures in place. Any other species is euthanized when their life is unbearable and beyond salvage.

Frankly, knowing that humans are still deluded enough state something as fact when there is no evidence or reason to support makes me disappointed and apathetic. Evolution still has a long way to go, but then our species will truly be something to be marveled at. Until then, it's ignorance and lower back pain.

In Britain, assisted suicide is illegal, but otherwise it's perfectly legal. After all, what is the point of it being illegal, if you succeed, you can't be prosecuted, if you fail, facing criminal charges is hardly going to help you rebuild your life and be happy and non-suicidal again. That's why here at least, the law was scrapped. Your life is yours and yours alone, if you don't want it any more, no-one has the right to force you to live it.

My opinion on this thread:

Fucking stupid.

Why?

Well, mainly because I'm here now, and i'll live my life right - so if there IS anything afterwards, then at least I''ve played my cards right. Frankly though, I'd rather be concerned with my life right now and get on with that and not contemplate death and what's after. While all fear stems back to death and there is a bizarre fascination with it, I'll pass on voting and spend my time doing decent shit.

Like getting with girls, eating and attempting to make the BBC let me have work experience.
