Half Life 2 crashing!

Postby ferret on Sun Jun 12, 2005 3:42 am

I need help from anyone willing to give it!
I'm having issues with my Half Life 2 game that I got through Steam.
The first and worst issue is with the advanced video options menu. After exiting that menu (whether I made changes or not) and then clicking apply, I get the little error sound and the game crashes, sending me back to the desktop.
I thought it might be a video card issue so I installed HL2 on another computer with a completely different video card. - Same problem.

I was starting to get the sneaking suspicion that this had to do with Steam.

There are some other annoying problems throughout the game, too. One, for example, is that the Breen broadcasts never can be heard anywhere in the whole game. At first I thought it was supposed to be this way, but I can't hear any other sounds that would be coming from microphone entities.

I just need some help badly, and would really appreciate anything that you can offer!

For the crash, I suggest getting more RAM. It's normally a memory error when hl2 crashes. About the sound issue, I really have no clue.

The graphics problem seems, to me, to be simply a case of turning your setting up too high. HL2 also crashes out for me, if I push the graphics setting too far. It may simply be a case of not trying to overstretch your rig.

Well, I thought of this at first, but the wierd thing is that this happens on two totally different computers. And, it crashes from that menu whether I turned video settings down, up, or leave them where they are. The game won't crash if I click to cancel out of the advanced video options and still click apply on the normal options window.

I think I need to contact some kind of software support, Because now when I come to think of it, not a single microphone entity works in the whole game, and then in the last scene at Nova Prospekt, (where you meet up with Alyx again and Eli at the teleporter), the console tells me it couldn't find the Alyx model, so I had to skip that whole scene!!!

Sounds to me like your GCFs are seriously corrupted.

Agreed. Did you have any problems during install? has this always been a problem, or did it start all of a sudden?

Well, I didn't have problems with the install, it went relatively quickly and smoothly actually. And this problem has happened since it was installed.
Thanks for the GCF idea, but I just used the steam online tools to verify it and its fine.
I have a customer service report heading to Valve right now so maybe I'll find out by Monday if that's when they're open.

Does anyone else have ideas or has the same problem?

(Thanks for the help so far guys)

Dont worry this happned to me to. My dad fixed it, but i think he deleted some stuff for HL2 like VMEX and GCF to make it run better. So if u have anything big like that delete it.

Well, its a new pc and here are the stats:
(yes, I know the video card isn't some super amazing nVidia card or whatever but it should work -- and does work great at the current settings - even at the biggest window sizes)

***********************************
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz
512MB of RAM (normally around 300MB free)
Intel Extreme Graphics 2 82865G Graphics controller
-with 64MB memory
-DirectX version 9.0
***********************************

Isn't this more than enough for the game? It works fine now and it's on various medium and low advanced settings. I just want to change some of them so I can see the cool water effects, but the game crashes even if I don't change anything!

Is there some way to change the advanced video options without having the game running?? - that could be helpful to at least troubleshoot whether it is a game issue or a video card issue.

Well I know what the problem is. I'm sooo stupid. The hardware directX is only 6.0
So I guess I have to buy another video card...
