Blink, was your guide ok with exploring buildings or did they stick to certain areas? And how long were they with you?

My question is why there's radiation there in the first place.

Did the place have a radioactive plant or was hit by a mini-nuke missle or something?

Possibly the one person who does not know in the world.....

A reactor went critical and began emitting radiation.

Emitting radiation my ass, the whole motherfucking core went kaboom. And the most fucked up part is that the kept operating the other cores for bunches of years after it blew up, even though the radiation would harm those who had to operate the remaining cores. Worst nuclear energy catastrophe of all time.

emittingpresent participle of e·mit (Verb)
1. Produce and discharge (something, esp. gas or radiation).
2. Make (a sound)

I was pointing out your understatement when you said "emitting" It did a hell of a lot more then emit some radiation.

Give it 800 years or so.

Actually, that's pretty much all it did. It was a lot of radiation yes, but the actual explosion only killed a few plant workers I believe.
I own this place, so you're my bitch.

You can't trust Russians with anything nuclear, they got radioactive shit laying everywhere.

If nothing goes wrong, you will be fine.
But if you decide to lay down on the ground (which is highly radioactive, especially the Bryophyte - like mosses - and low growth) or anything dangerous like that, you'll get radiation poisoning, the scanner at the checkpoint will detect your high radiation levels, and you will be rushed to the nearest hospital. I don't know what kind of treatment they can offer and how much it can do, but one thing is certain - radiation is not a joke. It's a one-way ticket to a terrible death as your organs are being cooked like in a microwave.

For more information you can check this friendly article in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiation_poisoning

But if you are radioactive, can't it spread to other objects/people?

I don't know if being sick from radiation means you're spreading radiation. However if there are traces of radioactive particles on your clothes they might be dangerous to touch. I don't know really, try the wikipedia link I gave you, it's quite comprehensive.

you dont get radioactive, as rafael says, you CAN breath in or carry around radioactive particles, which today, are mainly found on the land (concentrated in plants (soaked up) and ground/surface wather), animals. Earlier these particles still roamed the sky, the biggest part of them has already vanished, either decayed or fell down into the water or on the land.

this also means the main 'treatment' for when your levels are too high is... washing. high pressure showers, soap and scrubbing will clear out most particles. Your clothes will be disposed. Your bodily secretions may be checked and collected separately. There isnt much else to do...

In the time of the accident people got iodine tablets, it was because the most radioactive particles around that time were iodine, and the administration of extra iodine meant less chance of the thyroid gland to use or store the radioactive iodine.
