Map Battle 50 - Freestyle [EXTENDED]

Postby cz_squishy on Sat Mar 19, 2011 1:52 am

FREESTYLE

As a special treat for Map Battle 50, YOU get to choose the theme. Create what you ever want with Source. This is your time to show your true skill with the source engine. You can not use previous work, all work must be new. Try creating the most jaw dropping scene and bring out the true beauty of the source engine.

Deadline is the 20th of April, about a month

Rules:
State the theme of your map
No previous work, all entries must be new material
Three screen shots max
You should use an official Valve Source engine game
Custom content is more than welcome
More rules can be found here

Plenty of time to come up with some creative stuff, good luck and happy mapping!
Post W.I.P. shots and don't forget to mark your final screenshots as FINAL

Just think of those old black and white detective films:

If you're doing noir you can use photoshop to make it B&W, that's all, nothing more

WRONG..... He can use CC in hammer to make it B&W otherwise its cheating by definition of your own rule set.
- You can't use any kind of image/photo manipulation software to enhance your screenshots.
Also it should be mandatory that you state the theme of your map. Plus there should be no exceptions to the rules to any one person, otherwise they would gain an unfair advantage over the other contestants. If your going to lead the contests, at least make sure the rules are followed. Hopefully I don't sound like too much of a prick, but its bullshit to allow someone to blatantly break the rules since you say its okay.

Updated saying you must state the theme of your map
As for using photoshop to turn it black and white for film noir: use it only as a last resort. Sorry that I didn't state that before
Map battle 20- film noir wrote:There's an extra rule to this battle - the final entries must be black and white, or very heavily desaturated (only a tiny bit of colour left). For most people, this can be achieved in-engine using color correction. If your computer still doesn't support it then get a new one! then I'll allow you to do the desaturation in photoshop, or email me your screenshots and I'll do it for you.

In game color correction to make noir is very easy, it's just a selective HSV desaturating the entire scene. Use levels to tweak it to perfection. Why allow photoshop?

I got my theme now :D

Might be similar to no00dylan's in some ways, but should be good.

Hell do you even need to use CC? I swear there was this really old CSS map that used some sort of screen overlay.

Since I'm probably going to use L4D2 I'll just use their "third strike" color correction. Simple. Faking it with an overlay seems kinda pointless to me, seeing as even if they didn't have one packed, making and using one is really simple.
