SDK Is To Become Free For All

Postby ad_hominem on Thu Jun 30, 2011 9:43 pm

Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports that Valve have taken the decision to release the Source Software Development Kit for free following Team Fortress 2's change to a Free To Play game.

We emailed Walker for further confirmation, and he went on to explain:

We are in the process of getting it all done. It’s a bit messy because we have multiple versions of the SDK, and there’s some dependencies we need to shake out. But yes, the gist of it is that we’re just going to go ahead and make the Source SDK freely available.

So that's good news for, well, everybody. You can read more about it over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

I guess that explains sudden surge of (some official) activity at the VDC, and the cosmetic change.

Next up:
Buy EP3 and get a Commercial License to the Source Engine!

This is pretty cool though, gives more people more access to the engines tool sets.
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen

Valve is doing everything but actually fixing the Source SDK?

I would assume this is next.

Though, Valve has disappointed me before.

Now for the bad part: What's going to stop people from creating shitloads of steamaccounts, so that when they get banned, they can just log into another account and repeat their griefing?

Gabe says that right now a large chunk of the company is working on fixing their tools, the number of people working on it is comparable (or larger) than the number people that work on a game at any given point.
