Black Mesa: Source Interview

Postby Blink on Thu May 10, 2012 2:07 pm

Rock, Paper Shotgun have posted a two part interview with the project lead of Black Mesa: Source, Carlos Montero:

We’ve put a lot of love into making this game an amazing experience. When it comes to systems, levels, and weapons, we’ve touched everything, because we made it all from scratch. We tried to keep what we felt was evocative of the original Half-life, but when recreating these things we have inherently re-designed them. The combat, the puzzles, the mechanics and pacing of every level have been re-designed. The weapon strengths, animations, balance aspects – all re-designed. The systems, aside from being completely coded from scratch, have all been re-designed to some degree. There is nothing we haven’t touched, honestly.

It's a good read and re-enforces the fact that Black Mesa: Source is very likely to be massive - Part One | Part Two

I didn't think they were still going with that or not. Been a while since the said release year of '09, and it had been pretty quiet for some time. Glad to hear they are still moving forward with it.

Good read! Call me when it's actually in a download form... Good luck to them but I hear more talking then anything else... But none the less lets hope they eventually stop thinking of the bar they raised too high for themselves and finish it sometime this century...

It hasn't actually been quiet, there has been lots of activity on their forum.

Actually it bothers me (not directed at you) that people are so quick to say it's dead or vaporware or whatever, but if they would just visit the forums they'd find out that the developers are communicating with the fans on a daily basis and release snippets of media every once in a while.

well you can't expect people to visit forums to see if it's alive or not, this is 2012.. we have social media and everything.. lots of ways to let people know about your stuff

I'd expect people to visit the forums before they declared a mod dead, after 8 years I think the devs have stopped caring about proving they are still working and would rather just get on with it.

I see forums more for the people that really want to get involved.. not to check if shit is still going or not
why would you expect people to do the PR for them? lol

They don't want any PR at the moment, Carlos says as much in the interview, it hypes people up unnecessarily and leaves them disappointed.

I just meant I find it annoying to always see people claiming it's dead, if they care enough to make a comment and therefore know there hasn't been any media for ages, surely they care enough to check the forum or wiki for themselves. It's 2012, if someone doesn't know something, they should look it up.

I didn't read the interview yet, but I can understand that point of view
but I'm just saying.. under normal circumstances you wouldn't use the 'check out the forum' argument

anyway, still one of the few mods that I'm really looking forward to :)

Well, here's to hoping the mod will survive and turn out to be awesome. The trailer was so epic so I imagine the mod, when finished, will be that times 10.
