I´d owe about u$3500 then. I´m better running away if that were the case :P

Seriously, if that were real. And even when I´d disagree with them charging for it, I would pay ten dollars. That´s the highest price I pay for any game (unless it is hl3). But I´m a poor guy that only buys games on season sales and such.

$4,858, it would encourage me to idle less and actually power through working.

Ok, for me it's $7000.00 but alot of that is idling since the window is so small I forget to close it.

(please no one take anything I said in last nights post to mean I don't think Hammer is valuable or whatever, we all love using it and modding but still, Valve does have some catch up to do and has lost a bit of credibility, fully understanding that they don't have all the time in the world)

I'd pay for it if it were included in a new game release, specifically HL3-ish.. Otherwise: NO.

Depends on the quality of the editor. If its anything close to Hammer1, no possible way I would pay anything for it.

I understand that but for this hypothetical, we are assuming that Valve has, indeed, created "the Hammer editor of your dreams" which has some impressive upgrades. I don't want to say that this dream editor is comparable in ability to the Cryengine 3 editor...we must assume that there has been some reasonable upgrading to the editor, and that it is definitely more desireable than the current editor.

Because there are people here who have clearly not yet made the switch to a new engine. You must admit that Source has a unique feel to it that is desirable over that of Cryengine or UDK, at least to some people.

I understand. Its a comfort zone thing, and honestly I think that could be a reason they aren't in a rush to release source 2. The community IS the modding comminity for source, and when they move to a current gen engine, you won't have the luxury of brush based maps anymore.

I am very impressed with what they have out now and what they continue to release. They are still the best company around.

When you gotta pay for modding tools, that's when I end working on this modding stuff, because then obviously things have gone wrong, very wrong! I don't even have to tell you why paying for modding tools is just totally wrong idea. If the paid version gives me permission to make indie-games, then that's whole new story.. which I don't care about.

I'm with many of you guys.

I will not pay anything for modding tools.

Maybe I'd be willing to pay for something that comes with a decent licensing agreement. But it's going to be difficult for valve to compete with Unity's licensing.

Well that is a good point. What if Valve offered the new Hammer editor to people with a limited licensing agreement where you can make a Source mod/game, push it through the Greenlight system, and sell the game on Steam...but Valve takes a hefty cut? Like 25% or 50%? Again, this is hypothetical. (Also, no Source 2 access, it is just a new editor for modding the current engines.)

Well how many of you bought/will buy CS:GO/ASW to access the few new fancy engine features more than to play the games you bought? That's already paying to access modding tools. The difference is that valve has separated the actual item you purchased from the money you payed by rationalizing it out for you. "Oh I'm buying a game and the SDK features I am purchasing are a bonus". I'd hazard a guess that most of you are actually buying modding features and the game is the bonus.

And do we need to mention UDK? World class editor, active support, can make profit from your creation, built in version control etc etc. FREE
