Sadly this is probably true. Why won't valve just give us the Portal 2 or CS:GO code, how can it hurt them.

Yeah, though there is an initial investment. As you got to make sure there is nothing that shouldn't be released in the codebase. For example; unannounced games or some third-party code.

But yeah, it is not like they maintain the stuff after release. Shit, they only recently released ASW shader code, two years later. I can't even remember last time they updated the 2007 codebase....
