Valve Is Bringing Steam To Your TV Today

Postby Blink on Mon Sep 10, 2012 2:37 pm

Kotaku have posted a great rundown on the latest offering from Valve - Big Picture:

Here are the basics: this afternoon, when Big Picture goes live, you'll be able to push a button and turn Steam into an entirely new interface. It sort of looks like the dashboard on an Xbox 360, minus the advertisements and other clutter that can make that system so irritating to navigate. And it allows you to do almost everything you can do on vanilla Steam: you can buy games, browse the web, and even chat with your friends using the platform's standard in-game overlay.

The typing with a game controller is impressive, no one has ever done that properly.

You know the only thing left PC gaming needs is actual split screen gameplay, so that more than 1 person can play at a time. Then I would really wonder why anybody would want to buy a console anymore. It still baffles me why nobody has done this.

I always hated split screen.

I just finished reading the article and I realized they actually mentioned split screen. I'm glad valve thought about that. Split screen kinda sucks, but why not have it as an option? You can actually play with friends, like on consoles. It makes sense.

Price maybe, or not having to install games or keep drivers up to date, or not having to care about DRMs like SecuRom, or much faster to boot up then most PCs, or beeing sure that a game you bought runs on your machine without issues and on the max. possible settings.

Not to talk about the console exclusive games and even genres that are poorly present on PC.

I used to really dislike split screen before I got glasses, now I like it alot.

Big picture mode is pretty cool, at least on my laptop. It seems sweet, gotta try it on the bigscreen.

Edit:

lol @ "why should you have to make new friends?"
