[WIP] Daft Punk Helmet

Postby Spike on Wed Jan 04, 2012 7:22 pm

Hello.

I've been posting some images of the helmet I'm making. It's a replica of the Thomas Daft Punk helmet. Since I've got modeling skills and programming (and microprogramming) skills, I'm planing on making the led screen too with Arduino and some hardware.

What inspired me to do so is this guy: http://volpinprops.blogspot.com/ who's been doing lots of awesome replicas (HL2 and Portal too). He made this helmet but his workflow is so professional I'm going to follow a different one.

The fist step was to make a 3D model of the helmet in 3dsMax:

Then exported to pepakura and started printing and glueing:

I'm currently fiber glassing the front part, it only has the resin applied atm:

wow, i love these daft punk helmet remakes :)

the image of the gravgun do make me realise how odd the machine is; these scientists are able to build a device that defies gravity but cant think of a better place for the handles than the far back of the device...

I added the fiberglass, now it's as hard as a rock.

Goodjob! If you´re going to wear it be sure to cover every fluff with resin. It itches like hell! Also it is always adviced to create a mesh of thin wire and blend it inside the fiberglass, to reinforce the structure. Well, not that it has to be so strong but that would avoid cracks.

I'm goinh to cover all the helmet with bondo:

To prevent itches and so I can make it thicker to sand it down so it gets a smooth and rounded shape

Redid the helmet cause it was too little to put all the electronics inside.

A year since last update, but lots of things happened this year.

I've done lots of research for finishing this project, and I'm redoing it from scratch. I'm using another base which I think looks way better.

Making models in a 3D application is one thing, but in real life to make a model is totally a different story. So I give you a lot of credit for doing a splendid job so far. Looking great and I am excited to see more progress.
