Update:

Valve have revealed their third and final living room announcement.

We set out with a singular goal: bring the Steam experience, in its entirety, into the living-room. We knew how to build the user interface, we knew how to build a machine, and even an operating system. But that still left input — our biggest missing link. We realized early on that our goals required a new kind of input technology — one that could bridge the gap from the desk to the living room without compromises. So we spent a year experimenting with new approaches to input and we now believe we’ve arrived at something worth sharing and testing with you.

Valve have revealed their second living room announcement.

Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.

There is also an upcoming hardware beta.

This year we’re shipping just 300 of these boxes to Steam users, free of charge, for testing. You can make yourself eligible to get one. How? Read on!

The previous announcement : SteamOS

The first of three steam living room announcements have been revealed.

Steam is coming to a new operating system
As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the
environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

anyone know what loader its coming with? Personally I don't like grub, or at least the version i used a few years ago, didn't allow automatic OS selection and had to be removed in a weird way

I dont think anyone even knows on what Linux version its based on, let alone if there's some custom loader.

i am not sure how i am supposed to feel about this announcement, especially if they aren't ready to name some of the big names that are on board for "the future of gaming is linux". taken outside of the context of the other two announcements, this feels somewhat underwhelming. i suppose the other two announcements will have to prop this up (ie steambox and/or strong AAA partners?).

i also feel like Valve will not have any game titles to announce this week.

You shouldn't have expected any game titles anyway. SteamOS was kinda unexpected though. It seems unnecessary, but I can only hope they have good plans for it in the future. I just hope it doesn't take up too much of Valve's time and resources maintaining an OS. I guess we just have to wait for the other two announcements to see what we really think about it.

alll aboard!

Definitely no games being announced, the PSA was steam related. I'm going to guess steam gets a big update.
