Unreal Engine 4

Postby Blink on Thu Mar 20, 2014 12:11 am

Pretty radical news from Epic:

Epic’s goal is to put the engine within reach of everyone interested in building games and 3D content, from indies to large triple-A development teams, and Minecraft creators as well. For $19/month you can have access to everything, including the Unreal Editor in ready-to-run form, and the engine’s complete C++ source code hosted on GitHub for collaborative development.

Bought. Installing......
You click on Build or type
make (or some equivalent), and you are astonished, then mortified, as you realize that the whole world is being
recompiled and relinked!

Damn that's pretty bad ass of them. Was not expecting them to just make it openly available for so cheap right off the bat.

Epic sees Unity Engine taking over that's why they did this... The only problem with Crytek's engine is the lack of crossplatform support. (at least to my knowledge)

UE4 is too little, too late. It's literally doing what CE3 was doing 2-3 years ago, less actually. And now UE4 is released as if nothing like this was possible before, oh well.

Updating your knowledge:
CryEngine 3 runs on Windows, PS3/4, Xbox 360/One and WiiU . Linux support is/will be announced at GDC'14. I'm not sure if licensees can also already use the CryEngine for mobile, but there's already iPad/iPhone and Android support, as shown with their "The Collectables" mobile game. Besides that, they also are adding Mantle support. So...

Yeah I know Unreal and Unity very well but really havn't dove into cryengine stuff. That's good on their end to do that... I really would like to see Unreal on Steam so updates can be applied automatically in the future. I have so many different versions in my download folder :smt042

So then just pay for one month, and cancel your subscription. You just lose access to the latest monthly engine updates and support.

Aren't the tools for CE3 notorious for being a pain in the ass to work with? I know jack shit about it but I remember reading about it or something.

Yup, unless you have four studios with 100+ people working at each one then you can't make a decent game.

+ 0% royalty to Crytek.
Epic wants 5% royalty for UE4.
