Steam Community - Post here for invites

Postby NightWolf on Wed Aug 01, 2007 5:56 pm

Today someone on the FacePunch forums found out the beta code for the steam community before the beta was made public.
I tried the unreleased beta before valve shut it down.

The actual steam community site will be at http://www.community.steampowered.com
The site isnt up yet but thats the url steam gave me.

Here is some screens that some managed to take before it was shut down:

Ability to open steam while in game (Even 3rd party games)

I can't help but wonder if perhaps Valve are trying to do too much with steam. I mean the new steam community stuff looks good, but I seriously doubt people are gonna use it instead of msn/irc/ventrilo/skype etc

I agree somewhat with Spacejesus although when it comes down to it. i'd rather see Valve ruling the wya for online gaming as they did for online distribution rather then allow Microsoft to charge us for all this shit and give poor support.

I know of XFIRE comrade etc as well but I don't think they have as much ambition as Live and steam to be an all encoumpassing centre for gaming.

The problem is when you over centralise everything. A lot of things tend to suffer.

In a way, it's like google. They're taking over, but I don't think I care. Usually you don't want something dominated by one company, but with google I think they'll do it right. Same with valve. I hope.

I don't think I'd mind google taking over the world, same with valve and the world of gaming.

But that's probably naivee optimism about a probable future.

I think Valve naturally want to create an environment that allows them to create games more easily. They also want to make it easier for us to play games, lots of games, and make it easier to find people to play them with. For most games, it's the community's job to organise itself - one that is done willingly - it's not hard to see that things like this can draw a community together. How do I make contact with someone in Europe, and how do I play games against that guy without a medium to contact him though?

I think Steam Community is an effort to break those barriers down. With Steam, us gamers had a closer contact with the developers, maybe with Steam Community we'll have closer contact with one-another.

Hopefully itll be better than live.

If they give us the ability to add non-steam games do you think theyll give us more catogories or the ability to create favorite sets?
