Hammer editor & HD5770 video card slowdown issue

Postby trcc on Thu Mar 22, 2012 10:17 pm

Hey guys, I have a XFX HD 5770 video card and I've never figured out why I experiences slowdown while in hammer...

Problem: As soon as my level starts to get bigger and bigger, it starts to slowdown so much like if you play a FPS with 10 frame per second. It's really annoying when you're mapping trust me!

I used to own a Nvidia 8800 GTS and It was running so smooth. Problem is, HD5770 out performs my 8800 GTS in every aspect of gaming except for this issue... :(

It pushed me away from level design for over a year now as I don't enjoy it as much because of that issue.

My question: Is there anyone who experienced the same problem with an ATI product? I really want to get back to mapping but I hope I don't have to buy a new graphic card to solve the problem :x Nvidia released their new product line today by the way..

Hammer is very CPU dependent, not so much GPU dependent.

I'd recommend you just decrease the draw distance in the 3D view to around 2000-2500 units and turn off "show models in 2D" most of the time.

When it wasn't lagging, I had a dual core 2,4ghz and I had the 3D view to the max and all draw distance settings maxed out.

Now I own a i5 750 2,67ghz (quad core) with 8 gigs of ram, a superior graphic card and I get shitty speed within hammer... Can't be my processor....

Well, although i doubt it. If hammer uses open-gl for the 3d view then you´re pretty much fucked up because ATI´s open-gl drivers are utter crap.

I've had no problems that appear to be related to the 5770.

I did have some bad slow downs(even in simple maps) in ASW hammer due to a memory leak, but 16gb of ram fixed that.
Have a question related to modding or something I posted? Something that needs staff attention? I haven't been active lately, but feel free to PM me or message me on Steam(link below)

Same for me in simple maps, I get shitty fps as well ( less than 20 ) and in big maps It can drop as low as 3-4 fps. I doubt adding an extra 8 gb would fix it as I did not notice any difference with the addition of 4 gb.

I mean, before I bought my new computer, I recorded in-editor with fraps and it was running flawlessly ( WITH FRAPS ON AKA FPS KILLER In a big ass map filled with entities and shit )

Next step is to ask a friend to test my level with his graphic card

Xfx radeon hd 5770 full load:

870Mhz//1200Mhz

It's not like my card is using 2D clockspeeds... but the card temperature is surprisingly low compared to full load L4D2 (~75 degres celcius) while in hammer it is 50 degres celcius (my card IDLES at ~40-42)

I could test it for you if you send it via PM. To see if it's something in the map causing this.

My specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition(Quad Core, clocked at 3.5(stock))
RAM: G Skill DDR3-PC3-12800 16GB
VRAM: 1,024MB (1GB)
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5770
