FPS Map Design Questionnaire!

Postby Covelio on Tue Apr 03, 2012 2:28 pm

Hello FPS, map and environment enthusiasts!!!

I would just like to say that I think this forum and all the active users are great. Thanks to this forum, the people creating amazing maps and other various websites and forums, I have learned loads and plan to keep a log of my work. I'm going to be creating a multilayer map using UDK soon for my college final major project.

Right now though, I'm collecting research to help me and planning how I am going to carry everything out, which is the most important part of the process. I have created a questionnaire to gather some research and help me justify my design decisions. I have a link to the questionnaire which should only take 5 minuets of your time.

Any help with this would be hugely appreciated as it will help me achiveve the best mark I can get for my course before going to university!

Here is the link!; http://kwiksurveys.com?s=LLLJIF_46902186

Thank You! And look out for my designs soon on the forum

Filled it out. I noticed a lot of people mentioned Counter-Strike in their "best moment" response.

I think most of the questions were made with a fast-paced arcady shooter in mind, which i disliked a lot, you could have easily named the survey "What elements do you like the most in Call of Duty?". You couldve asked things about the pacing of a map, wether players prefer slower maps or enjoy faster ones or a combination of both. Personally I dont really mind in which environment the map takes place, as long as it makes sense from a logical standpoint, so to add to that a story would be cool.

All in all the decisions made for the map should be based on whats best for the Gameplay and not which Elements the player likes the most (If it has no impact on the Gameplay you can obviously add everything the player demands for). If, for example, your new map plays in a nightly setting and doesnt play well, because theres always a nasty sniper hiding in the dark, well guess what: Change it to a daylight setting or place more cover there.

Also you may want to suit every type of weaponry: Have long distance areas, that will be used for sniper duells, while giving the rest of the players possibilities to pass those areas without easily falling prey to the snipers.

IMO most of the questions answer themselves when you begin making a concept of the map, once you have the basic idea set, the rest of the decisions will come up naturally when you think about problems that arise in the gameplay and how to counter them. Doing playtests on a regular basis should help a lot to encounter those problems too!

Just do whatever feels right to you.

Done.

I liked the 'Survey Results Area' at the end of the survey, but I have a question:

How do you intend to use this data? I'm not entirely sure how easily it can be tabulated, or read into to form a response in the form of a working map?

Just curious :-) Best of luck Covelio. I hope you do indeed stop back by to update us on your studies, and show us your developing map.
