Valve Teams with "9" Director for Animated Movie

Postby darkpivot on Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:25 pm

I thought this deserved its own thread for discussion. This is really interesting. I thought 9 was an excellent movie, and I can't wait to see how this goes. This is basically machinima on the big screen now, that's really cool. What do you think?

Excellent. I'll be looking forward to seeing a movie rendered in source ^^.

That is cool. Didn't know Source actually provided cinematic production that was really handy for developers who were not of Valve. Interesting, I never know what I am gonna see coming from this engine.

Probably similar tools to the ones Valve use for all their valve videos, like the L4D intro or the meet the team videos.

Didn't expect this, sounds awesome. An underwater environment, full blown movie, this is all new grounds for valve. Their TF2 videos were fantastic so I can only hope to see what Valve can really do and what source is really capable of.

Sounds good, in the 'Loper chat yesterday we were talking about real-time rendered CG movies with UE4, maybe this will be the first on Source.

Valve isn't making this though. They're only letting the movie studio use their tools.

@Arma; I highly doubt this will be rendered real time(with practical hardware). I assume they can test real time with lower graphical settings, but the final rendering with be at <1FPS.

The movie will most likely be rendered at either 2k or 4k, which is impossible to render realtime with the post processing effects they will be using (frame blending motion blur, Depth of Field, etc.)

This is awesome news. This could very well be a stepping stone for Valve to get their foot in the door of film making. I'd love for them to start making movies.

PS: I think this is worthy of front page news.

I think all they (the people in the article) were talking about is Source's compile process, and how much that cuts down on the time it takes to make the movie. Nothing to do with real-time/prerendered.

I wish we had those tools. Cause the tools we got do the exact opposite.

SFM has some pretty neat features , its a shame we cant use them in game mode.
The trailers for Portal 2 and Dota 2 that used SFM looked awesome.

Pretty sure that was a teaser that did not have their full effort. I did notice some lack in good detail environment wise though.
