That sucks man. I gave up mapping a about 3 weeks ago. I'm going into modeling and drawing. I noticed that you want to do some modeling but can't afford any programs such as Maya, 3Ds Max, XSI, Z Brush, etc. Well there is a free modeling program you can get and it does just about everything Maya does. Its called Blender 3D and I'm using it right now. I'm quite sastisfied with it. You can download it directly off of Blender's site.

Blender is a god send.

I found out about it when i went to a uni open day, its the program i will be using when i go to uni. The maker of it went to the same uni as the one i applied to

But yeah at first the user inteface is a bit confusing, but once you got to know it its amazing you guys will really enjoy it.

Also if your working on something and you want to save it DO NOT quit Blender. It won't ask you if you want to save your work before you leave it just shuts down the program.

A couple of free programs i use are Blender and Gmax. Also i have heard a lot of good things about xsi exp. Stear clear of maya ple though. imo its horrible. Giant water mark o doom getting in the way all the time.

Also cinema 4d is a worthwhile investment. It's not free but its far cheaper then maya, 3dsm or xsi and far more powerful then any of the free ones i have mentioned.

So far the best modeling programs I've seen are XSI, Blender, 3DS Max, and Z Brush. I haven't hear anything bad about maya so what are you complaining about? The Final Fantasy movie was made using Maya.
